first gear problem

first gear problem

hey guys,when i put the mite in first four wheel drive it locks up,like its in two gears at once,any solutions?

John, the only thing I can think of off hand it the shifter socket head may be worn or where it goes into the shift rails is out of whack. Did you try adjusting the control arm? That is the rod that goes down the back of the T-case. Let me look at the manual and I'll get back with you.

Are you on the roar when you try 4- wheel drive if so it is hard to shift , you should be in sand -mud etc.

Edis, I find mine goes into 4X4 quite easy at any speed, even at 40 + mph. Of course it can't be put into first while moving. I DO find it difficult to take it out of gear at speed or on pavement.

John, it sounds as if you have the reverse idler backwards maybe. I can't remember whether there is a difference between fore and aft but if there is, then that will be your problem. It's trying to hit first and reverse at the same time. To test this, try not putting the gear shift all the way into the first position. Try holding it back a bit and see it it still locks up.

bill once again your advice was right on,i will put that rod back in and adjust the linkage,that should cure the problem.i talked to wild bill today at the store and he sure wants his old mite back,what a nut.thanks again bill.
