buying an issue tow bar can be an expensive proposition. i drew up my own plans, and had a welder make one for me.

Nothing wrong with the light duty towbar that the Govt. issued, you did not say if you want a Civilian hitch or not.
There is a towbar made for the HUMVEE which likely could be adapted and may be lighter than the old steel light duty tow bar.
Most M series stuff will likely be found on the Steel Soldiers forum though.
Any towbar made for civilian automobiles could have the ends redone for the shackle mounts, but they are not very far apart for a good spread on the towbar. And from memory, the MUTT suspension doesn't like towing very well, it tends to get squirly as there's no weight in the vehicle.

I know this thread is old, but I have one for sale. As a Marine Mechanic, I would not tow a Mutt very far. All gears and driveline are moving and I would discourage dragging one around too far.

All the gears moving is no different from when you are driving it. The main problem is the steering, it will want to go all the way to one side or the other and stay there. You need to put straps on the steering wheel to limit the amount it can turn. That way it still turns for normal turns but will not snap all the way over and stay there.
