interesting Modifications M-151 on Craigslist in GA

Post by hbtcoveralls » Sun Jul 24, 2016 9:02 am

Noticed this M-151 on Craigslist in GA and I don't recognize the modifications done to the fenders and the wheel arches. Is this a military adaption? or Post war body?

Definitely NOT military! The only modifications they did to the fenders was on the fast attack vehicles they hammered the fender lips out of the way for bigger tires. They did not really care about mud on the sides of the vehicle. The ability to squeeze into a tight spot was a lot more important than fancy fenders. (and ugly)

That one looks a bit "homemade" but the US Mil actually experimented with a wide-body M151 in the 60's....and here's a picture of it:-

Experimented is the key word here, I would bet that military one is a one off and is probably at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Never know, may be the same one? wouldn't that be a find? proving it would be impossible.

The extended fender on the craigslist M151 appears to be more narrow than that of the one in the archive photo. The tail lights are also different. 8)

The tail lights are an A2 light upgrade, but you can see where there is just a piece of sheet metal laid on top of the fenders and then more sheet metal wrapped around the sides. Poor workmanship all around.

Thanks guys that's pretty much what I thought. I hadn't seen a GI modification quite like it and thought that it might have been either something special or a complete one off. No interest, although it's not a bad looking 151 if you look past the fenders

I clicked on the expanded pics and even though the front floor look good which sometimes indicates the underneath may not be bad, the entire outer bodywork just about has been skinned over with sheet metal. The grill had an expanded metal cover on it, you can see the outline. That was a favorite of the Vietnamese although this one does not have the stainless band on the entryway that all the Vietnamese ones have. And their bodywork is much better.
