RT-524 Radio

It sure would be helpful if you radio folks would take 5 minutes to hook up an antenna to the radio to see if it works. Otherwise, $350.00 for essentially a boat anchor is a bit much.

Send some pics to bdmoonraker@earthlink.net - my M151 will need a boat anchor to keep it from rolling out of my driveway. :P

Biggest Problem to sell an RT-524 ~ As Is! ~ No Guarantee!

Post by M1 Gadfly » Wed Feb 25, 2004 5:15 am

Over the past couple of years, I've sold about a dozen RT-524 radios. A few were late edition units built by TADIRAN in Israel in the early 1990s. The newer ones were pretty stable units and would all function after being shipped.

Problem that I found was that even with most of the "working" radios, you had to sell them "as is" . It's real easy to blow out the components and kill a radio that ten-minutes before was transmitting and receiving. Sometimes there's no apparent reason seen. If installed in a vehicle with the radio switched ON and the engine started, the current will overload the set and most times wipe out your RT-524 or R-442.

Another factor can be incorrectly installed wiring or bad mounts. Bought a brand NEW in the USGI packaged 1029 mount from a dealer a few years ago. Installed the mount and part of a radio setup in a CUCV that I owned. Never bothered to check out the mount before plugging the radio into the thing. How stupid of me! There was a huge arc flame and lots of smoke as the connection was made between Rt-524 and power on the 1029 mount. The connector on the radio was melted !

As it turned out, the seller had picked up the brand new 1029 mounts in the wrap as surplus scrap materials at Tobyhanna Army Depot. The mounts were all rejects and had been wired in reverse by the manufacturer. Needless to say, that nice working RT-524 was cooked and transformed into a boat anchor.

Another time at an MV show a guy was bugging me to sell him the working ( was transmitting on it at the time) RT-524 radio that was in the M151 I had there. Told the guy in plain language that the radio is old used military electronic materials and if sold, there was no warrantee given or return on the radio accepted. All sales are final! If those terms are okay then I will sell the radio to him. The guy agreed and I sold it for $450 cash. He told me that his jeep was already wired and set up for the RT-524 and he was ready to go. Off he went across the field happily lugging his 60 pound radio.

A couple of hours later this guy comes back all angry and screaming for his money back saying the radio doesn't work at all and he'd been cheated. Told him, when radio left my hands it was working as he witnessed and agreed. It was transmitting and receiving! After that, you're own your own. Didn't argue with him as to the reason for the radio being now DEAD. Who could know what the factors were once the radio is out my control?

In most cases with this material, you're also dealing with 20 - 40 year old electronic equipment that has components which are starting to break down with age too. It's all pretty finicky high voltage stuff to begin with anyway. The radios make for another hobby unto themselves.

Even if "tested" by the seller, a working radio might be a DEAD DUCK once received anyway.

Good luck MV fans!
