Rifle Sub Cal Cal. 30 M9 for 106mm RR
I received 2 Sub Cal Cal. 30 M9 Rifles for the 106mm Recoilless Rifle. One is complete and the other is missing the Door Assy #8 and Pin #7. I will contact John and see if he is able to machine the parts. Mine has a threaded assy that retains the firing pin and this would be easier to machine than the one shown in the pic.
The rifles I have are not like the pic they have a different front securing make up. I will dissemble and take pictures to Post later.
I have the T&E functional Plus the 106 is now functional and the firing pin clicks. I received the tripod and will mount the adapter to the T&E mount the 106 Breach Assy insert the Rifle and fire some 30-06 rounds
the Pic and List are from TM-9-1015-221-34P May 1986

Re: Rifle Sub Cal Cal. 30 M9 for 106mm RR
Charles,
The parts picture you posted is the later changed model of the sub-cal device. It was changed 12-1-1965. Your M9's are the early versions pre 65! The 3006 barrel and nose assembly were changed along with retaining nut after 65 according to documents/prints I have.
That should be to play with!

Re: Rifle Sub Cal Cal. 30 M9 for 106mm RR
A little more follow up to your post Charles!
Design Changes M9 sub-caliber device.
The following is some of the changes to the part numbers.
Barrel (early) #7307557---Barrel (late) #7309726 minor changes to threaded length of barrel.
Muzzle Nose(early) #7307556------Muzzle Nose (late) #7309725 total design change w/alternative design.
Bushing (receiver end) w/serial number #7307553 has not changed from original April 2, 1954, also the shell case #7307559 has not changed from original.
From research it appear the design Muleman has in his possession did not change until that 12-1-1965 date and not many of those M9 parts will match part numbers in the TM 9-1015-221-20P or -34P dated May 1986.
Would like to see more pictures of parts disassembled Muleman, you always seem to be able to post good pictures.
I would be very interested in purchasing a later designed (post 1965) M9 Sub-cal device if anyone has one for sale!
Thanks!

Re: Rifle Sub Cal Cal. 30 M9 for 106mm RR
Does the M9 Sub Cal Rifle use a modified M1917 water cooled barrel? Is the Modification only on the end of the barrel plus the vent holes. One of my barrels have the vent holes in line with the barrel. The other barrel has the vent holes drilled in a helical pattern like the riflings.
Complete pics of a dissembled rifle to follow.

The barrel used for the M9 Cal.30 sub-caliber was used with the M1917A1 MG (1005-672-1640). Barrel #6535388 after modified becomes #7307557 (early), #7309726 (late). It appears the only change was the threading at the muzzle end. Both models call for 8" from chamber end, 1 1/4 " 5 equal spaces. .125 Dia 24 holes, 6 holes spaced into each of the four rifling grooves. I have to look again but mine the MG original part number is xxxxx though.
Hope this helps!

I took additional Pics of the Rifle Sub Cal .30 M9 and posted them to the original Post to keep order. Glad to do this for W Roberts.
Walt I would like a copy of the earlier manual covering the Sub Cal Rifle. Or can you take pics of the fig and list showing the M9?
Can the Browning 1917A1 Water cooled barrel be modified to use with the Rifle Sub Cal .30 M9?

Re: Rifle Sub Cal Cal. 30 M9 for 106mm RR
Charles,
Thanks for posting the pictures!! Unfortunately I do not have a manual earlier then 1986 & 1969 that gives a break down of the M9. I got that 1965 date from Tec data that just states there was a major change to the sub-caliber device. no manual! The shell case & receiver end part retained their original part numbers, most every thing else changed as I described above. The nose cone, Nose cone retaining nut, door assy all seem to change. There just doesn't seem to be any hard information about the parts used pre 1965 like the example you & I have.
I don't see any reason why you could not use M1917A1 barrel if you drilled and threaded just like the one you have.
Hope this helps!

Spoke with Bill Bird, He suggested I contact you About the .30 Caliber Sub Cal device for the 106 MM RR which I bought along with A M274A5 Mechanical Mule from Mechanical Mules of America 5 plus years ago. Also looking for all the parts for the .50 Caliber Spotter Rifle. The 106 clicks when I push the fire knob in. The .50 Cal was stripped out but the shell. Can you help and old retired Jarhead? Please call or contact me. My H: 410-788-5119.
