The M79 mount is used with the jeep item 3

This mount could be used with the mule but will require modifications to hold the mount so the mule could be driven. PROBLEM this mount will hold the rifle at least 18 inches higher than the mule under bed mount and will cause the mule to be unstable. The gun and M79 mount will weigh more that 600 pounds.

The M27 Mount is used with the Mule item 4

Muleman is on time and on target!

There has been a lot of confusion about 106-mounts & Nomenclature. If you have a 106-mm project I highly recommend you find a copy of TM-9-1000-205-12 dated March 1959 "Operator and Organizational Maintenance Manual" for Recoilless Rifle 106-mm. The basic manual covers the M79 mount into jeep, M38A1C. Change 1 dated 17 July 1963, adds the M92 mount for the M274 Mule, also nomenclature changes of mounts & tripod. Change 2 dated 13 October 1965 adds mounting the M79 mount into M151A1C. Emery Mule LLC now has those changes and they should be available soon.
Note; just as an FYI the M79 mounts (sometimes called wheel barrel mount) are slightly different, M38A1C early M79 does not have a bracket added at wheel end of mount, bracket was added for M151A1C installation.
Hope this helps!

I am in the process of building up my 106mm and these details really help.
Am I to understand that the mount, M92 is interchangeable between the M79 wheel barrow tripod and M27 tripod as illustrated?
I understand that the capstan adapter is required to affix the M92 to the mule under bed mount.
BTW, I could sure use a lead in procuring a M92 T&E as I already have the mule bed mount, a M79 for dismounted display and the tube itself.
Anyone?

When I bought my 106 the M92 was bolted to a M79. I have the under bed mount and an adapter assy. I must bolt the M92 Mount to the adapter assy to mount to the mule under bed mount or the Tripod T26 changed to T27 fig 18. In fig 18 does the 106-MM Rifle Mount T173 include the Adapter Assy?

Yes, T&E mounted on either M79 (wheel barrel mount) or M92 (T173) with capstan added is the same T&E.
BEWARE: disassembly taking M79 T&E off of mount be sure you remove the correct cap-screws (6 each). The other cap screws on the bottom of the T&E are preloaded for the bearings in the bottom of T&E. Same thing going other way, removing the M92 (T173) capstan adapter and mounting T&E on M79.

A year or two ago someone was selling some of the late Jack Tomlin items. They had T&E’s for sale, I had pictures, can’t find them now. They had a plate bolted to the bottom of them that I had never seen, but after seeing pictures of 106mm RR mounted on M113 APC’s I, believe that was what that plate was used for. They wanted to much money!

Going to take a stab at this, each T&E should have a round (early) or square (late) data plate mounted on the left side bottom below elevation wheel on T&E. What does your data plate read? If it has M79 then it came from Ordnance for the wheel barrel mount. If that plate has T173 or M92 then we can assume it came from Ordnance as the mule/tripod version. If your data plate is missing, it can be either.

Just to add to all this; MWO 9-1015-221-30/4 (Army Modification Work Order) 2 November 1971 was a modification to provide improved firing mechanism. With this MWO the name plates for mount M92 and M79 are replaced by a common identification plate as a result of this MWO. The new identification plate identifies the complete end item: model M40A2 indicates use of Mount M79; model M40A4 indicates use of mount M92 with tripod M27.
So if you have the MWO plate M40A2=M79 (wheel barrel mount)
MWO plate M40A4=M92 (mount with capstan)
See pic below!

According to a friend of mine also an 82nd Airborne Vet, that was 11H anti-armor, 90% of the time the 106mm RR were jeep mounted w/M79 mts., but they also had the capstan assemblies in the event the mission requirements changed to use with their M274 mules.
It was a Direct Support (DS)/ General Support (GS) requirement to change or work on the mounts.

Hope this helps!

When I purchased the T&E it was mounted on a wheelbarrow M92. The T&E should mount on the Rifle Mount Adapter using the same 6 cap screws?

No different cap screw's! If it is a wheelbarrow mount it is an(M79)

The 1986 manual's have many errors, I use the -35P much more detail dated 1969
The M79 wheelbarrow mount T&E is secured to the mount using 6 each cap screw's MS 16998-58, 5/16-24 UNF-3A, 7/8 Lg

The M92 (T173) T&E with capstan adapter is secured with 6 each cap screw's MS 16998-60, 5/16-24 UNF-3A, 1 1/4 Lg

Hope that helps!
