Unknown model Mule

Post by aidave » Thu Jul 07, 2016 2:23 pm

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and new to the world of Mules.
I acquired this 4 wheel steer 2 Cyl mule a week ago. The guy that painted it should be shot!
I assume its a A2,A3 or A4 but its missing the data plate. Are there any other ways to determine serial number etc?

Dave

My first guess, based on the photos, would be an A2. Absolutely DO NOT run that engine without the top engine shroud!

Roger that! Already on order...(shroud) Does the lack of identification make this one a poor candidate for restoration?

Not really, based on what I see, I'm 99.9% sure you have an M274A2. The homemade bed and engine guard, on the other hand, may make a restoration impossible. Any chance the deck has just been covered with the diamond plate and the original magnesium deck it still under there? You might be able to find a good used A2 deck, but things like the 4-wheel steer changeover access cover, the engine deck cover and any model engine guard are almost impossible to find these days. You may be better off to simply get it running and enjoy it like it is, rather than try to restore it.
Is there any signs of the registration number that was painted on the sides of the deck? If you knew the registration number, I might be able to tell you an approximate serial number. Try some light sanding on the sides of the deck and see if you find anything.....assuming those are still the original deck sides.
