Although it looks like it in the photo, the angle on the two top bolts is so slight it is not really a problem. The bracket pulls down tight against the case and you really can't tell that the holes are at an angle. I would not go to the expense and time to remove the frame tube or buy an angle drill. The long 5/16" drill bit is all you really need.
BTW - NEVER let the wife see the mule bills....if she asks where that new mule or mule part came from, tell her you won it in a raffle!

She's caught on to that trick
She'd see me with a new gun and ask "where did you get that" my reply would always be "what, this ol' thing, you must not have see it in the cabnet." She knows when I'm "up to no good" when the boxes start showing up on the porch! Like gitting stuff from Bill Watson cause I can raid the piggybank and send a money order instead of putting it on the plastic.
SHHHH.... here she comes

Re: Four Wheel Steer Kit Installation
Chuck,
Great write up on the 4WS conversion...... these are really helpful!
Since the deck and wheels are off, I'm going to get into that this week....Just one more question?
When you drilled out the bosses for the rear bell crank, what depth of hole, (and length of fastener do you reccomend?)
I assume the fastener is longer than just the hole depth since you need to allow for the bell crank bracket...
Thanks,
Rob

The top holes were 3/4" deep, and the bottom holes were 1". We used a stop-collar on the drill bit to keep from going too deep. I don't remember the length of the bolts, but I think we used what came in the kit. As long as the bolt is at least 1/2" longer than the thickness of the bell crank bracket, you'll be OK. Be sure to use a bottom tap to finish the threads to the bottom of the holes.
The production 4WS mules used studs to hold the bell crank bracket to the transaxle case. The threads in the transaxle case are 3/8" x 16, and the studs are 3/8" x 16 on the transaxle side and 3/8" x 24 on the bracket side.
Good luck, and post photos of the finished project!
