Post by Mark Jesic » Mon Mar 12, 2018 1:29 am

Guys, what has happened to our freind with the crated jeeps. No photos , no replies, just another fantasist im afraid. Lets be straight, there are NO original crated jeeps left in the world, except those down the bottom of the sea. :(

I would say finding a crated jeep is a pipe dream. Have not been any around in decades.
But, that is not to say someone does not have one in the corner of a storage shed some place.
Years, and I do mean years ago, local Army Surplus stores had stacks of them, for sale, at salvage prices.
You better not buy just one. They had been picked over and it took several to get enough pieces to make one.
It is hard to find an Army Surplus now days.

I agree Mike, in England we had army surplus stores all over the place, now there is hardly anything. I suppose defence cutbacks are to blame.

Just out of curiosity, I did a search for Military Stores in my area. Indianapolis, In. South of my AO.
Found 4 and two of those were not really military surplus.
The other two were selling military clothing and " trinkets". K-Bar bottle openers. 50Cal. bullet pens. Dummy hand grenades and ammo. That kind of stuff.
No jeeps in a big wooden crates.
The place I was thinking of was out on the west side. Beside crated jeeps, they were selling things like new Mighty Mite V-4 engines. Good stuff. Gone now.
I think there is an auction site on the southwest side, that has sales every so often. Sells real military hardware. Not toys.
Don't know what you have to do to get in. ???
Probably a lot of red tape !
Have to check into it.

A guy I used to know at Fort Bliss told me there was a time when small operators could buy army surplus. he used to make a nice modest living. then they stopped selling it like that. I kind of wondered why so called army navy surplus stores only sell junk boyscout cookware and knives lol

The MV Collectors movement had an effect on anything WWII and really took off in the early 60's. Everything connected to WWII , weapons, apparel, MV's etc., caught the eye of this new generation of collectors. The MVCC(MVPA) played a big hand with "ARMY MOTORS" and SUPPLY LINE. Before that, there were no periodicals form's, Rock and Dirt, Gold Dirt, Shot Gun News, and a few back page classifieds in Popular Science, were the route MV'ers took. Big Surplus Truck dealers such as Supreme Surplus, Harry Reiter, Southeastern, Dixie, Firestone, SARAFANS, Memphis, Mutual, Winer, Highland, Zelligson, etc .
Each dealer had a jackpot of bumper to bumper NOS parts.
I did business with all of them.

The place I was referring to sounds like Rondo's guy in Ft Bliss and In the time frame Joel mentioned. The 60's.
I think this place was on west Washington St. in Indianapolis. Gone now.
Had all kind of neat military hardware. Not like the junk being sold now.
Of course, as life goes. Just when you have a good thing going, POOF !!. Somebody changes the rules.
