PRIOR TO THE MB

Post by Joe Gopan » Thu Feb 22, 2018 6:21 pm

It was only a handful of years before the MB that the Army traveled by horseback.

Is that picture of the donkey real or one of them trick pictures ???
I don't think that soldier is going to need those extra rounds. After the first shot, that Bray is gonna disappear into the sunset in a cloud of dust. If he didn't have a heart attack first.
As for the motorized quadra-cycle, I bet that thing was really effective. The enemy would be laughing so hard, they couldn't get a shot off. Especially if the rider rode into combat dressed like that !!
Wonder if it went forward until he pulled the trigger, then it backed up ??

The trick is to sprinkle some oats on the ground prior to firing. Hopefully he will not look up.

On a 2005 4th of July Parade I was honored to carry a WWII Vet in my jeep. He was with a unit in the South Pacific that was a Machine Gun Company. They did not have jeeps at the beginning of WWII, they had mules...the four-legged kind. He preferred a vehicle over the mules....they were a bit dodgy to load/unload when in combat. Nobody ever accused a jeep or a WC of being just plain "mean" or "stubborn".

Or this...granted...the only one built. I had the pleasure of seeing this and get a little “hands on time” with it at the 2000 MVPA Convention.

Glad you enjoyed that one, 43.
My grandfather was a farrier in a Cav unit in WW I.
He said they had mostly horses but they did have "Pack Mules" in his outfit and my guess is, that is what this is all about. The recoilless wasn't actually fired from the mule's back. The mule was used to carry the weapon to the battle. Then it was removed and set up on the ground, on a stand. If you look under the round canisters, you can see part of the stand. The rest is most likely on the other side.
I was in one of those moods when I saw the picture.
As for the quad,

The Maine National Guard had Horses as late as 1935. CWO DeRoche started his 41 year career as a "Stable Boy". Joe retired in 1976.
