Some folks don't deserve old jeeps...

Post by roblenzz » Mon Feb 05, 2018 3:29 am

Just browsing youtube and came across this.

https://youtu.be/ypBkVZmWffQ

It's a sad sight seeing the old girl fall through the ice. .. Looks like it was on its way to being restored

There be fools in this world.
And there are just plain idiots !!
The driver should have walked across the ice first, to check it out before driving on it.
Maybe he would have feel through first !!

I'm sure they eventually pulled it out...I just hope it wasn't an original engine!

Obviously he never saw the TV show..."Ice road Truckers" where they go through the ice but more to the point, as soon as he drove on the ice it began to crack which should have been a good clue that it would not support the jeep.

Now if that creek was 8' or 10' deep and was rapidly moving it could have been fatal to the driver under the ice and nearly fatal to the jeep. You can restore drowned jeep but its another whole thing to restore the driver...ain't gonna happen.

He's got dumb luck I guess.

You guys are like old fogies. That was a great video, and if it was your friend who did that you would have been laughing too!
They knew the risk they were taking, it was in Tennessee not Michigan. They probably also knew how deep it was.
Plenty of jeep motors have survived being submerged. It was probably fine.... :D I am sure those guys knew how to check the block and clear it of water.
Thanks for posting that. It was great!

I love it when people stick up for their own kind. maybe you could give them a call and go with them in the right seat for their next cross country trip, now that would keep me laughing  ...make sure you get a video of it.
I would not use the seat belt. and that was a great video

The laughing likely did not last all that long. Good example of a poor mix of man and machine.

I admit it was dumb, don't think they flooded the engine, it still had the fenders above water, so the carb wouldn't have sucked it in. I bet he bailed when his B---s got soaked in frozen water.
It was interesting to see it spin out, but I'm sure many other jeeps, trucks and tanks (people) have fallen victim to ice ponds....Maybe if he was lighter it would have made it.

I managed to find the only stinking frozen duck pond in Germany on Reforger '86 walking behind some troops as an OC. When they halted I walked around to inspect and my foot broke through the ice covered by the fresh falling snow in a 8' round hidden pond. THAT was one cold night with a boot of frozen water walking for ten miles to their objective. (My jeep driver had just left too  )
I remember Super Bowls with a distaste as it was Super Bowl Sunday with the score being announced on the net over my PRC-77 at 3am.

I will agree with Winget. I don't think the engine completely submerged. A major plus for a running engine.
I wouldn't want to be the laughing guy, making the video, when the driver got off the jeep.
He didn't look too happy.
I could tell.
He kept communicating with the guy making the video with hand signals !!

Yea,,,

Yea, I did,.... nothing I like better then to see people get what they deserve.

Now that was a great lesson that the driver could have never learned in a class room, I'm sure he's a lot smarter jeep driver today for it.

Well...I don't care if they were in New Mexico, when the ice starts cracking as soon as you start out on it, the driver of the jeep or the other guys should have brought up the idea that it was too thin to support the jeep. Evidently the allure of ice skating in a G503 or something was too much for those guys. I get the feeling that the camera was rolling because someone expected something to go wrong...if they discussed it and made bets on him making it or not i can see how the laughter was warranted with an in-said "I told ya so!".

I doubt the owner will do THAT again. After he pulls it out and drains the water from the axels and the exhaust system and possibly the transfer case and spends some time and money to get that jeep back to where it was before this "adventure" began, he may want to try crossing streams in Alaska in winter, not in Tennessee....

This one was a pretty close one to what you would see on that show "Jackass" maybe?
