London Military Museum Recommendations wanted

Post by 2/14Marine » Sat Jan 20, 2018 6:50 pm

I'll be visiting London and Edinburgh in June. I'm trying to get some recommendations for any military museums or any military vehicles sites to see while there.

Thanks

Hi Javier,

IWM in London, http://www.iwm.org.uk/

Maybe Edinburgh castle, never been. Lots of people will be going over to Normandy early June, so might not be many events going on.

Hope you enjoy your visit to the UK :D

Javier, at the end of June ,just outside Birmingham, at Kidderminster, the Severn valley railway runs a wartime weekend. There are WW2 vehicles, costumes and themes, and a Spitfire flyover. This is a really great event, topped of by a forties big band and dance. Not to be missed, i know its a bit off the beaten track for your plans, but if you can make it, you will be most welcome. :D

Just outside of London would be one of the best warplane museums in the world at Duxford, a part of the Imperial War Museum

Thank you so much for the recommendations. We will be there June 4th - 14th. My wife is planning this or I would be making the trip to Normandy.

Thanks

Ditto. Specifically the Churchill War Rooms.

Battle of Britain Museum in Hendon just outside London. The Mosquito Museum is outside London as well but I can't remember the name of the town. Surface warfare museum is part of the Duxford complex. Make sure you go into Cambridge when you're at Duxford to see the Kings Pub ceiling where lots of American aircrew wrote their names in smoke. Also the pub where Watson and Crick announced the structure of DNA and the American WWII Cemetery out side Cambridge.

If you hankered for other museums there are plenty, unfortunately the Royal Artillery Museum in Woolwich closed after it moved (following 180 years on-site) See the Tower of London for sure.
There's the Cutty Sark ship in Greenwich, the Royal Observatory and a National Maritime Museum there as well.
I could live in London a few weeks with museum visits.
So easy to get around too between the Tube/Taxi/Bus and walking.
The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds (too far to the North) for the National Firearms Collection would peak my interest.

Thank you for the recommendations. As well as for the Kings Pub. I expect I'll find my way into a few those as well.
