Hood stenciling
Guys, advice needed. On Canadian contract jeeps was a star on the hood as standard or none at all. I have seen various pictures and preservation projects, so i need your expertise. It is an early jeep 13-2-42, contract CDLV242. Also if stars were used am i correct in thinking they were put on upside down. Thanks in advance.

Re: Hood stenciling
Why would you need US stars on a Canadian contract MB?
Or hereon these threads.

I do see what you mean about photos cropping up with an invasion star?

Re: Hood stenciling
It would depend on how the jeep was being presented: if it was a "factory" resto or a in-service marked jeep or one being prepped for/in the Normandy invasion. I for one would be surprised to find out that Canadian jeeps arriving in Normandy on D-Day or afterwards would NOT have at least an invasion star stenciled on the hood. I believe that was a mandate for all vehicles to avoid being misidentified by any Allied aircraft and being strafed. How they were delivered is a different deal all together I suppose.
Allied aircraft on D-Day were marked as "friendly" with three white stripes running fore and aft on each wing no matter if they were being flown by Americans, Brits, Poles, French or other pilots.
Once you decide how you wish to present your Canadian contract jeep you will know if it should have star(s) on it.

Re: Hood stenciling
Interesting photos and threads Mark, i would not have an invasion star on it as it was not used in Normandy. I do know it seen action in the Italian conflict in 1943, but that is all the wartime history i know about it. The jeep is fully restored and looking at the photos posted i will not be having a star on the hood, i do like to keep it authentic and original as possible. Thanks for your help guys.

Scan down to "National Identification"
In 1942 they used the roundel on the hood
By 1944 they used the star

Re: Hood stenciling
Hi Mark,
No star ,
A roundel would be appropriate for Commonwealth vehicles if they were requiring air identification. The Star was not added until Spring 1944. The yellow around the outside was added to make it more obvious and should be about 2" wide, but it varies.

Re: Hood stenciling
I went for the easy option guys, the upside down star has been put on, no invasion circle around it though. I know my jeep was used in the 1943 Italian conflict, but not for the D-Day landings. Hence the upside down star ,which is how the Canadians stencilled them on. Many thanks for all your input.
