A-1537 FM/GPW WWII VALVE GRIND GASKET SETS

Post by Joe Gopan » Sun Nov 05, 2017 9:28 am

Any users of A-1537 FM/GPW 18387 V.G. Gasket Set Valve Grind?
These have the Original WWII WO-8558 Cylinder Head Gaskets manufactured by DETROIT GASKET. These are the wartime originals that do not have the metal fire dams that go completely around each chamber, they just have short 1" fire dams where two chambers are nearest each other.
I have had a quantity of these sets since the 40's and have installed dozens in Jeeps with WWII Heads.

Are you still using original gaskets in your vehicles Joel? Do you steam them to enlarge them back to their intended size? Any benefit to the partial dam of the cylinder head gaskets over the full dam of the modern cylinder head gaskets?

I personally hate using original parts especially when using them leads to their eventual destruction.....parts (and gaskets) are only NOS until they’re installed and used....then they’re just nice used parts.

Not all gaskets shrink and deteriorate, many will work fine, been using, selling, installing them since the 50's. It all depends on the condition of the block and the head, not all Jeep engines are candidates due to warpage and erosion, that's where training and experience as an automotive machinist and Jeep technician helps out.
Many also buy these as curios. The cork gaskets are dry and can be restored, I choose to use fresh stock as they are thicker. I just did a valve job on my GPW engine, it has 18000 miles and had one of these original early gaskets as described above. The gasket was in perfect shape and did not leak.

I mostly keep NOS gaskets as curios also.
