Re: Differential covers ford gpw 1945
Not 100% sure but a late war GPW may have also had the stamped differential covers as did late MB's, which bare no markings. The GPW cast covers do have a GP part number (GP 4016) cast on the inside and in most cases a script "F" cast on the inside also. They are also marked USE HYPOID OIL ONLY on the outside below the fill hole. The Spicer manufactured cast covers have the Spicer part number 16977 and the foundry marking cast on the left side of the cover....sometimes the 16977 number is found on the right side between the middle bolt holes.
Hope this helps.

Cast Iron Covers were thicker and were marked, late covers were stamped steel with no markings.

Joel, when was the approximate change over date to the stamped cover for MB's and when was it for GPW's?

I don't have it in my head, but NABHOLTZ Revised and Lloyd White's volume of books should indicate the change.
Tom addresses this under the topic of "Weird Axle Castings", says the change over for Ford and Willys was early to mid-44. NABHOLTZ addresses it in his book.
