Re: War surplus paperwork for Jeep
Amazing documents... 'boxed'
Just a pity the jeeps on that list don't have frame- and hoodnumbers included.

Re: War surplus paperwork for Jeep
Hello,
WOW !!
Now this is Proof Positive , that after all the speculations, and assumptions, over the years, one way or the other, and through the sands of time, ....... that .........
JEEPS were indeed offered and sold in Crates/ Boxes, in disassembled and new condition, by the US Army here in the USA !!!
I have heard this over many years, by several people who reported this, but this is just a rare and highly interesting set of
documents.
I imagine that these documents are about as rare as the Bantams, and 1941 Ford GP's on the list.
Great work, thanks for sharing with the Jeep World !!!!

Hello Stretch,
Such important documents, could you also post these under the Jeep History Research section as well,
so they don't get overlooked in this busy General area ?
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: War surplus paperwork for Jeep
I think I went to that Broad St. address in Columbus Ohio early in 1972 to look at some surplus stuff for sale. No MBs or GPWs then, though. Just 3 M-38s that had burned up.
Is it true real Jeeps have flat fenders?

Great find, and thanks for sharing
In 1946 what was roughly the average price of a run of the mill family car back then ?
I am not sure what the exchange rate between the pound and dollar was then, but $700 ish seems a fair bit, or were you guys across the pound all earning big time in the 1940’s

What a find, fantastic history, how ironic that the 41 and 42 jeeps were so much cheaper then. How times, (and prices )have changed.

Re: War surplus paperwork for Jeep
Loved reading that, thanks for posting.
I recall reading a follow up book by Dick Winters (band of brothers) and he said as a private his pay was 22$ a month. that would be an expensive jeep! Assuming you saved almost all of your paycheck and didn't get promoted it would take you over 3 years to save up.
I seem to recall that when he made 2LT with airborne pay it jumped to over 200 a month.
I also seem to recall that as a kid, my best friends grandpa who served in WW2 in Germany told us a few war stories. I asked if he'd ever been a Sergeant. He said yes, 3 times! He said he didn't like being a Sergeant, because those guys got killed.
Now I suspect few save their whole paycheck. My father who was in around 1958 said they were paid so poorly that they had $ for liquor and fun but saved very little.
Not such a great deal now is it?
Would you spend 3 years pay on a govt surplus HMMWV?

Re: War surplus paperwork for Jeep
The third document posted states that they don't have the particular model jeep he specified at that location.
I wonder what model he specified? Bantam? GP? MA?

Re: War surplus paperwork for Jeep
Concur with your "not such a great deal" conclusion.
In 1946, the average annual civilian income was $2600, per the AFCEA link below. Apparently, a new car averaged between $1100 - $1400 in 1946, depending which source one wants to believe (https://www.afcea.org/content/price-lif ... 46-vs-2006) or (http://www.tvhistory.tv/1946%20QF.htm). To these jeeps were a substantial savings, UP FRONT. Somehow, I suspect that we have better access to spare parts today than in 1946.
Interesting thread, thanks to the OP for posting these documents!

Re: War surplus paperwork for Jeep
Well... not so sure it was a bad purchase. Based upon an inflation calculator I found on the net, $782 in 1946 dollars would be about $9,800.00 today. Can YOU buy a new vehicle today for $9,800? Can you by a brand new WWII era jeep today for $9,800.00. Figure that same brand new jeep if uncrated in 2017 would run $30K+
