Float plane take off from a concrete runway

Post by artificer » Mon Aug 07, 2017 1:00 pm

Now this was really worth watching

How does one get a ‘Cessna 185 Float Plane' to takeoff from an airfield's concrete runway?
Well, where there is will, there is a way!

This aircraft was extensively overhauled in a dry land facility & was then launched back into the air from the Mitchinson's Flight Centre in Saskatoon, Canada, where there was no water upon which they could float the plane for take off.
This is fascinating and so brings back the era of the daredevil air show feats of the nineteen thirties.
Watch this and see how!

Chevrolet should buy the rights to advertise the acceleration performance of their trucks.

Hope they don't get those float planes to that shop via the same method!

I have seen an air show stunt where a Piper Cub is landed on a platform on top of a moving pick up truck. Spot landing to the MAX !!
The truck and plane are driven up and down the flight line and then back to the runway. Both get up to speed and the Cub takes off.

I hope they remembered to leak test those floats.

Wow! Better them than me. I prefer landing on non-moving runways with nothing else around!

Yeah, got to watch such an act in person a few weeks ago. OUTSTANDING! He did not actually land on the pickup, but drove/flew down the runway with one tire on top of the cab. Even put a slight dent in the cab to prove it happened.
He also got to a certain height (1000 ft?????) and shut of the engine. Then did dead stick aerobatics on the way down, landed and taxied up to a guy on the runway, stopping just touching his outstretched arm. :o :o All with the engine off.
OK, I was impressed. I may be easily impressed, but to me it was a great act.

With stunt I saw, the guy did not actually land on the truck itself. There was a platform built on top of the truck and the plane landed on that.
Still not an easy thing to accomplish.
Bob Hoovers energy management air show. Go to altitude in a twin engine Shrike Commander. Shut the engines down and do a series of aerobatic maneuvers all the way down to a dead stick landing. I have seen that one several times. Outstanding !!!
