Re: Bottle openers on jeeps.
There is no mention of factory provision for bottle openers in SNL's. They would likely not pass motor pool inspection.

Re: Bottle openers on jeeps.
Ben,
If your going to suggest to people what you don't think they should put on "THEIR" own jeep [Why crap up a good jeep with junk that was not made for it] maybe you should remove that three piece base sticker on on the driver's side of your windshield [that went out several years ago] they use ID card's now, and the two unknown stickers on the pass. side windshield, and the home made plate you have on the front bumper.
If your going to play "JEEP POLICE" at least have your own WW-2 jeep correct.

That "home made" plate is in memory of a very special family member, a WWII Ranger who more than paid his dues to his country.

I think that's a great way to honor your family member, i like it. I think if it's your jeep you should put on it what ever you want, I sure would not call it [crap and junk that was not made for it].

Re: Bottle openers on jeeps.
Another Home Made Plate at the request of the Maine Air National Guard 20 years ago when they requested the MB for General Yeager, air show guest of honor.
Aviation historian Merle Olmstead, M/SGT USAF Retired and former member of the WWII 357th FG provided examples of WWII period markings for the event.
That plate in the lower photo is a license plate topper from the 1946-49 years when the 14th Fighter Group was stationed at Dow Field. They were the first unit assigned the new P-84 Thunder Jet. I have many friends and exciting memories from those days.

Re: Bottle openers on jeeps.
You have a beautiful motor pool Ben, I'm sure all of your vech's would pass any inspection.
Not to tell my age, but I worked on brand new RF-84F's in Japan when we lost our F-86's and the last F-80's in the far east.
BTW..I was in the 14th AF for several years, here's a pic. of my jeep when i had the WW-2 14th markings on it. a long story for another day.
I guess we better get back to Mark's bottle opener's before he slam's us.

Re: Bottle openers on jeeps.
Kinda on the same page, aren't we, I grew up in the middle of USAF early jet history, Dow was also the first to get F-84-F's (506th SFW)and it's bugs, they planted them all over Maine most of 1954. Saw the first C-124 to land at Dow back in early 52 during sub zero temperatures, they were two or 3 days getting it started.
Bottle opener? It still ain't worth drilling a hole for.

Re: Bottle openers on jeeps.
There was another unique twist involving bottle openers during the battle for Bastogne - "Operation Uncola."
Chaos, cold weather (1944 was pre-Global Warming) and lack supplies have been well documented. Germans in American uniforms and captured vehicles (Jeeps) presented another dilemma. With frigid temps, no paint, not to mention the hazards of lead-based paint, modifying markings similar to invasion stars & stripes was not an option.
While not widely publicized, VIII Corps Commander Lt General Troy Middleton ordered all Coke openers removed from Jeeps. Strategy was, any unfamiliar Jeeps WITH Coke opener would be highly suspect and allied troops were to be at-the-ready, safeties off.
Just how many Jeeps had openers removed is of course, not documented. There was, after all, a war going on.

Re: Bottle openers on jeeps.
Maybe Gen. Middleton knew that German captured jeeps were fitted with "FANTA" bottle openers because they could not get "Coca-Cola" marked ones and that would make it easy to identify them as German soldiers driving them?

Well, yea, but now you have the wrong screw - and I think that is supposed to be just as bad as a bottle opener.Mike Wright wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2018 6:07 pmJoel,

Clever, Mike. I still have one of the old "Church Keys" we used to give out at our burger joint back in the 50's. Will put it in the glove box.
