Re: GPW OR MB, whats your preference.
GPW, MB? no real preference, These Jeeps all had the same purpose and provided the Army and other branches a 1/4 Ton 4X4 to fight a war. I am thankful just to have an example that is turn key and still able to do its original mission. There is no truth to the story that MB or GPW were issued geographically by manufacturer.

GPW's are more rare then the MB's, plus their a lot faster then an MB and their driver's are normally more handsome. BTW...I own a GPW.

Remember two different manufacturers, 100% interchangeable parts, thats why its known over here as the "All American Wonder". I feel priviledged to own one of them.

Re: GPW OR MB, whats your preference.
Not just two different manufacturers, but two manufacturers in a fiercely competitive market where 9 out 10 manufacturers had already gone out of business and each manufacturer was diligent about maintaining their edge and were still able to make 100% interchangeable parts. Truly a herculean effort by our greatest generation both at home and at the front.Mark Jesic wrote:Remember two different manufacturers, 100% interchangeable parts, thats why its known over here as the "All American Wonder". Re: GPW OR MB, whats your preference.
Willys Overland didn't manufacture much (if any) of the MB. They outsourced most of the manufacturing. One could say they were more of an "assembler of parts" than a true g503 manufacturer.

Re: GPW OR MB, whats your preference.
Remember Consolidated did this with the B-24 with Ford and North American.
Boeing B-17 with Douglas and Vega, Grumman Wild Cat and Avenger with General Motors, Vought Corsair and Goodyear. Willys made Corsair center Sections, Boeing B-29 with Martin and Bell. P-47 by Curtis, Packard with the Rolls Royce Merlin, P&W R-1830 with Buicl and Chevrolet. Garand by Springfield, Winchester. .50BMG was subcontracted, M-1 Carbine had a handful of manufacturers. Lionel Train Factory made Telegraph Keys. The list is long.
