Taking the original question of this thread, and then considering the sentiments relating to the GPW's more complicated and weaker chassis, and adding rarity into the mix, surely the most desirable Jeep is an early production GPW with the Willys supplied round crossmember chassis.

Don't do it! After you buy your second jeep then you'll buy another...then another.....it's like a sickness...you won't be able to stop. Take it from someone who knows!

Best to buy one and restore it to the best of your ability cosmetically and mechanically. It's a great feeling to have restored and a 100% turn key Jeep with all the tinkering eliminated.

It's more fun to learn from actual hands on experience from intact Ford and Willys Jeeps. The GI's who worked on them noticed the differences in the motorpools.
So many questions because most need their hand held and have zero mechanical skills
Also they want to be spoon fed,, and can't be be bothered to do their own research

The Army ran comparison tests between a new MB and GPW, nothing dramatic.

This thread is about our preferences as a collector.....not how the army viewed these vehicles.

And what the Army discovered should still be a factor, after all a lot of testing was done in the development of both in order to achieve the end product. Best to do a little homework before making an expensive decision on the choice of a WWII Jeep.

Hope I'm not bringing a conflict back to life, but of course after reading everyone's responses I now feel the need to chime in...

I own a GPW so I'm biased. BUT, I think the coolest part of having a GPW is the fact that whenever someone sees it and asks about it, the first thing they say is "that thing a Willys?" It's always great to surprise them by saying it's a Ford and then backing up that fact by pointing out all the little 'F' marks  Now, that said, I would happily buy an MB next and park it beside my GPW in a heartbeat.

The Willys name is legendary in the US and everybody has a story about a Willys Jeep that they had or knew somebody that had. So Willys seem to be more searched for. But a top-notch GPW will sell for a little more money than a top-notch Willys MB
