Joel...I don't know what date you are using to signal the "rubber shortage" but Willys did not go to the S Springs until November 1942....I believe the rubber issue began much earlier.

Why did the Jeep seats change to springs is a good starting point.

It takes a while to absorb some Jeep history. It's out there, and there are many ways to accumulate knowledge.

Crude rubber supply was a concern from early on during WWII and not just limited to that used in Jeeps as there were some uses that had priority over automotive and combat vehicle use.

There is much more information concerning the restricted use of rubber prior to that featured in Lloyds fine book volumes, and there are students of Jeep history who have absorbed and shared that information for generations.
During WWII, the bulk of United States Rubber stockpile was needed for war machinery, tire industry was the largest consumer and military needs had priority and there were priorities within those military needs. Jeep cushions used rubber and supply for that use was critical. Incorporating springs into Jeep and military application seat cushions to save rubber was one solution. On the civilian front, tires were rationed. I can remember my grandfather having a special permit to buy tires for his panel truck.
There are some who remember the Rubber Drives of WWII and enjoy sharing this information.

I have taken note that while Ford went to a fibrous grommet for the firewall wire openings, I don't believe Willys ever did. At the same time, while Willys may have gone to a S spring seat bottom and seat back cushion, Ford never did go to an S spring seat back cushion....go figure!

And now you know a "little bit" of the rest of the story involving wartime seat cushions and how industry adapted to the critical supply of rubber.
Every once in a while I used to give a presentation to grade and high school history classes and would include some of the above when explaining the hard riding Jeeps.

And for those studying WWII Jeep seat cushions you may come across the topic of medical issues caused by long hours spent driving WWII Jeeps. More than 80,000 GI's were treated for this condition (Pilonidal Cyst) caused by long hours in a WWII Jeep seat. This condition may also have had influence in WWII Jeep seat cushion design.
Reading thru WWII "ARMY MOTORS" may help share a little cushion knowledge. There is still a lot of information buried in the heads of the old timers to be shared. It takes time.

Without looking it up, I will assume a Pilonidal Cyst could also be known as a 'Pain in the Ass'.
