Chronology of the Jeep Seat

Post by mjs240b » Wed Mar 22, 2017 3:40 am

I have been doing some research on the chronology of the types of seats used in jeeps as the war progressed. Does anyone know when production started and stopped on early zipper type seats, sealed horse hair seats and the serpentine spring and horse hair seats?
Best,
Matt

Lloyd White authored some excellent articles with Illustrations in issues of MVPA Army Motors and in his recent set of books on the MB Jeeps.

Mark, that chart is externally helpful. Is there any source for original serpentine spring seats that can be recovered and or reproduction serpentine spring seats?

And the reason for the change to springs in the later Jeep Seats? To conserve crude rubber.

What rubber products did they omit from earlier production???
With the seat covers that were supposed to be filled with a blanket, didn't that pretty much omit all rubber?
Is it true real Jeeps have flat fenders?
Alone cannot you it resist!

That doesn't make sense Joel. The mid series MBs were using springs with non-rubberized hair padding and zippered compartments. The padding that is similar to the padding used in the late series cushions.

Yes the 1994 Lloyd White article talks about the rubber being removed by the military but this has to do with the early GP and GPWs. None of this is mentioned in the Lloyd White books for the MBs.

From the collections of cushions I have (so far), I'm only seeing the rubberized hair in the GPW cushions. The MBs has been the horsehair (non-rubberized.) Though my collection is probably lacking compared to Farrell and what he has and has seen in his studies.

There is a bigger picture to the use of seat springs rather than components made using rubber concerning it's use in the production of WWII wheeled and tracked vehicles. it is all there in the footnotes and credits of WWII reports on war production material some of which is critical resulting in its use being limited to certain items. Rubber products are just one.
