And here is a couple of after pictures.
Regards Randall
Heres the chassis after all the repair work, I welded the cracks on the inner rails without dissassembling them which was good, I replaced small sections of chassis rail on the rear spring hangers and bumper cross member mounts.
I also fitted a fish plate to the damaged streeing box, spring hanger area to be safe.
I fitted some home fabed front bumper gussets in between the rear of the rear spring hangers and chassis the same fashion as the front to add strenght.
You can just see the wings sticking down.
Starting to look good.
The springs were a miss matched set of the four only two packs are WW2 one willys and one ford, so I lashed out and bought a complete set of repo ford springs and shackle pins.

Here's a bit of back ground on the diffs, sorry I am not much for typing so I will post a few more pictures you blokes would have seen this before no doubt.
Regards Randall
The front diff, plenty of wear on the push side but servicable, new bearings and seals through out will see it back on the chassis.
The brakes were dissmantled and overhauled, linnings, cylinders, front drums were all replaced and rear drums machined.
Fabed my own brake lines and fitted them.
There was a little surprise in the rear diff for me, fitted a new centre and sun gears, bearings and seals.
This usally happens when you try and jerk someone out of a bog with a fix tow coupling.
This is a good picture of my home made diff stand sure made it a lot easier to work on the diff assemblies.
Fitted the diff assemblies with new "U" bolts.
You can see the upside down front bumper gussets fitted between the rear spring hanger and chassis in this picture.

Thanks John it's slowly coming together, it's been two steps forward one step backwards at times.
While I find the Jeep to be a very easy vehicle to work on, when you are working from old TM's with old tech you can miss a lot of later improvements or tips and tricks.
Until that is you read them here on the the Forum then hopefully it's before you have restored it but quite often old Murphy strikes.

Hi Ranall,
That jeeps looking good! For reference for others, what brand of paint are you using?
Murphy's might strike here if you so desire him to!
It would pay to tin (solder on/in the earth points for the battery and engine earth straps) now, as it will help later on, especially if you do it 6volt. Here's a thread I did.
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=183135
Haven't had a chance to look over those numbers. Got some time on a bus (school trip) coming up, so might try to look then! Incidentally, down your way, but no time to stop and say hi. Going to the abattoir at cowra with the kids from school then back to orange and onto dubvegas.
Cheers,
Ian.
Edit: to add praise because of my poor form not to say how good it looks!

Re: Another from downunder GPW143639
Thanks for info on the tinned locations, I do plan to stick with 6 volt.
The paint while not the correct OD is RAL6014, I have seen a couple of jeeps done in this colour and liked it enough to use it myself.
Is there any records of American jeeps in Australia, what numbers where, when, how they were used and what units they issued to.
Regards Randall

Re: Another from downunder GPW143639
G'day All, I thought I would a couple more pic's of when I restored the Transmission and Transfer box.
Here it is as it was removed from the chassis mounted on a little stand I made.
There was no real suprises in the gear box and transfere case, other than the missing park brake parts I just replaced the bearings, seals and fitted small parts kits.
Here's the completed assembly ready to be fitted back into the chassis, I went to an auction of willys jeep parts in Tamworth and picked up some nice parts I needed like the band and linkage for the park brake assembly.
There was no real surprises in the boxes I just fitted new bearing and seals and a small parts kit.
The transfer case is the wrong colour, this was never going to be a factory restoration more a preservation , I am trying to assemble a complete Willys Jeep as a weekly driver.
Regards Randall

Re: Another from downunder GPW143639
Just a quick question, do the three Grill mount holes share the same centre line on both axis's and on assembly is there anything between the mounts and the Grill eg. a felt pad to absorb the movement in the chassis ?

Re: Another from downunder GPW143639
G'day All, The bonnet off this Jeep has a few extra holes, I have worked out most but I am a bit baffled by these.
Anyone have any idea what they may have been for ? (the 2 holes at the front edge of the bonnet)
Regards Randall

Re: Another from downunder GPW143639
G'day Ian I have been back and had another look at those markings and there are numbers in the upper circled area, nothing wrong with your eyes.
The number I have is 31054 with the possibility of a 1 or 7 at the end and possible 1 at the start.
I have checked the AWM site and can't find a match to any combinations, I think what I have is 20131054 would this match a mid 42 MB.
Regards
Randall

Glad i wasnt seeing things! After seeing it, I agree with tom that there is definitely a 127 in there. I checked all the entries which start with 127XXX, but no ford GPW's- lots of MB's (and blank spaces, dodge 3 ton trucks and other random things!). When you feel game, please check the bonnet again and let me know. With an ARN (Army Rego Number), it is a very quick process to find the jeep! Even a very very lightly oiled rag, very lightly wiped over the area may reveal something- the oil sticks to the high area. Alternatively, very slowly sanding with extremely fine wet sand paper slowly might work too.
I was interested in the rear panel photo- can you please check and let us know what appears to be painted in my highlighted circles?
Often the ARN was painted below the gerry can holder, which may be the remnants of what can be seen in the bottom circle on my edited photo below. I`m not sure what is in the top photo.

It may be my eyes again, but it appears there might be something on the passenger side bumperette too- markings of some sort?.... or its just scratches in the pain and rust!
Cheers,
Ian.

Hi Randall,
Thanks for following up on the number. A shame it isnt an ARN, but promising that it potentially could be a USA number (though an odd place for it at the top of the panel!).
Back to the research drawing board.
Ian.

Re: Another from downunder GPW143639
I havent been updating this much so I thought I would try and catch up.
Here's a couple of pic's of the engine, I stripped it down honed the bore it was allready at max over size but because it's not a ford motor I wanted only to much sure it would be a runner.
I fitted new bearings, ring, reground crank, rebuild the water pump, recut the valve seats fitted new valves and guide's, reground the cam follows and replace all seals, welch plugs and gaskets. Carbi had a complete going over and rebuild. Cleaned up and fitted new heat valve kit.

To continue on with the update, this is what I started with pretty much everything within 6 inchs of the floor needed replacing due to the tube sitting for years full of rotting leaf matter.
Regards Randall
And the sheet metal work begins, left side.
Right side,
In these pics the floor riser is just visable as well, I did all the sheet metal work myself in my home garage.Regards Randall

Re: Another from downunder GPW143639
I fab up some new wheel wells, rear floor and purchased some toolbox lids and surounds.
Randall
Put some work into the grill as well.
Once I had all the pannel work done I completly assembled the jeep and test drove till I was happy, then pulled it apart again to paint.
