Hi Otis,
Great work, it is always interesting to see a bit versatility.
In one of previous photos, rear side of Gpw is shown, and red marking reflector looks like it has led lamps in it. Is that the case or it is only flash light reflection?
If it's led tail light, can you please make few closer photos?
Regards
Dfast

Re: Intro: Hello! Me and my GPW/MB
You are right. These are the tail lights/ directional- and braking lights, too. According to austrian laws we must have some extra lights... the original lights of a war time willys/GPW is just not enough for the officials. Usually most of our G´s have some extra lights left and right of the bumpers. Others cancel the original lights and put some allowed lights into the holes of the original ones...
I didn´t like extra backlights. So I decided to replace the rear reflector with these universal lights. I covered the hollow directional glass with a hollow red color. The yellow LED´s are bright enough to shine through the red color...
braking light is very bright

sorry, no picture at the moment...it is raining like hell. I will take some tomorrow...

Wow, that is one nice looking jeep!! It helps that blue is my favorite color, too.
Is it true real Jeeps have flat fenders?
Alone cannot you it resist!

normal backlight
backlight + directional (directional is much more yellow than is seen on the pic here. the cellphone photo qualitiy is not the highest...)
braking light is twice as bright as the normal backlight
(couldn´t take a picture, because my foot was to short for braking and photographing at the same time )

Re: Intro: Hello! Me and my GPW/MB
Thanks for pictures Otis,
Led tail lights are still flat enough which doesn't change normal appearances of rear side. That is what I wanted to see, great finding.
I have found similar trailer back lights also 3.5cm thick but 14.5cm in diameter which is a bit too much. Thanks for sharing this Otis .

What a great idea on the lights!
Now I am mad at myself for not thinking of that!
(the brain wheels are now turning.....)

What a nice GPW! I can relate to it! I was a career USAF Cold war guy. My dad joined the USAF in 1948 and served in the Korean war. His brother was in the USAAF. He flew P-38s in the Pacific with the 9 FS, 49 Fighter Group in 1943. He was Dick Bong's wingman when he went MIA on 7 Nov 1943. I don't have any European theater family connections, dangit. Wish I did!
I also like the LED/reflector idea. I want to rig up some turn signals on my MB for the MVPA Route 66 trip this fall.
Jimn - I'm a fellow Ohio guy. Did you work out a solution? We can share ideas or I can pilfer yours!
