I think you both mix up factory resto and what these jeeps used to be. Outstanding job this is and no comment needed beside that you think it is a beauty.

I have already noted twice, and willingly confirm, that the restoration job is first class. Not that my praise was needed, since the gold award speaks for itself.

Nevertheless some friendly observations can be useful both to the owner and to interested readers who might be facing the same doubts.

More so when a possible minor flaw can be corrected at no expense and without hardly any work.

That is why I think that my suggestion of leaving the oil dipstick cap unpainted might not be totally useless, just as the other suggestions posted by Chuck Lutz.

Also, any guy entering his jeep for judging is by definition aiming to as close as possible to 100% correct, so he usually appreciates any tips given in a friendly way aimed to correct possible minor imperfections.

Honestly, I do not consider the comment on the preceding post very appropriate, and obviously I would rather hear the jeep owner's opinion instead.

EDITED May I add that the pictures are not in the exact restoration time sequence, as I now noted the cap of the dipstick Painted in RED which is a nice motorpool touch.Thy would at times paint in red the originally unpainted cap.

I wish that I could have driven a Jeep like this during my time in the Navy. What battery did you use and was there Army numbers under the Navy paint?

A truly first class effort! Award was well deserved.
Follows very closely Phil Nelson's unrestored Navy GPW.(one of the very last surplus jeeps from the Navy Depot in Mechanicsburg PA.)
Phil's has late war OD as the base, with USMC forest green and finally Navy grey on the top.
One can see all the layers while looking the jeep over.
Even original canvas and tires

Thoroughly have enjoyed the process of your jeeps rebirth! BRAVO!

Cheers, Ed 8)

Wow. I love the pictures, they help me a great deal. I have been building early model cars and hotrods. I always wanted to build a GPW and now I am finally doing just that. Thanks for the pictures and I will try and post mine sometime. Hope it looks half as good as yours.

Absolutely awesome job, especially with the paint! This is the first time I've seen this a Navy jeep painted like this...makes perfect sense and it's great to see someone recreate it! 8)

While I was in Dubuque IA flying formation with the T6/SNJ NATA crowd my 1945 Willys WWII vet took 1st (Gold) at the Military Vehicles nationals in Portland OR in the restoration class. Out of a possible 1200 points, it scored 1180. Thanks Jimmy!

I guess because the thread is so old is why I cant see those pictures. A navy jeep holds interest for me because pop was in the Navy. At Pearl Harbor, serving aboard the U.S.S. Pennsylvania. It sounds like this particular jeep was done to very Correct standards from what I read here.
