I got the Pinion tool and will soon be ready to start the rebuild. I also picked up an NOS Scherr Tumico Depth Micrometer for the job.

Yes, nice truck you have now. With your forum handle I was expecting another brand, but those little Ford Jeeps have a way of growing on you. :)

I saw that you were going to build a rotisserie out of three engine stands for your tub. Were you able to get that completed? I made one for my tub with three stands I scored for about $75 to $80. I just posted an ad on Craigslist and I had people selling them to me for $20 to $25 each. I posted pictures on my thread when I build it. If you haven't got to it maybe they may be of some help. By the way, your project is looking great! Keep up the great work.

Today I finally got started on the front differential reassembly. I replaced all bearings, the ring and pinion and new shims. Here are a few pics of my calculations. The pinion is engraved with “+5” which indicates that its ideal checking distance is Five thousandths of an inch greater than nominal, or 2.250” + 0.005” = 2.255”. We prayed because it was hard for me to figure out seeing I have never did this before and there was no one to ask. The Lord helped us, giving us wisdom to solve the problem. The allowed tolerances are +2 or -2 of 2.255. we are 2.254. I would call that a dead on pinion alignment. Considering, that the Ordnance department had a .033 total of shims and that would have made the set up go clickety clack . It should purr like a kitten going down the road.

please do check them before installing. They mostly are correct but I had one that wasn't. And make sure the are in balance of their weight. If you checked that you should have a very nice set of rods.

I used plastigauges, they come in very handy. Just google and you will find the answer. One of mine was just to tight, after 2 sets of bearings I found out that one new rod was out of specs. So messure to know, don't install blind thinking it will be correct right out of the box. Perhaps I just only had bad luck, but you never know.

Ask a machine shop to do a dimension check if you are not sure. Torque the caps and check the big ends for size/roundness.
They can check for twist too.
I have had a few NOS engine parts that were not quite in spec.

Update: Engine build is progressing, the rods were checked all NOS 1 & 3 and 2 & 4. I am doing a little upgrade and having the engine fully balanced, 3 angle valve job, hardened seats and stainless steel valves. The block is being sleeved back to original with Std. pistons and rings. I tried to find a standard crankshaft but could not. Hope to give you fellers new updates and pics soon. Be encouraged and finish your build! GOD Bless America, GOD shed his Grace on U.S. !

What did you coat the inside of your transfer case with? It doesn't look like standard red oxide?
