1942 Ford GPW #20385883 rebuild

Post by crazychevelleman » Mon Jan 07, 2013 4:28 pm

Gentlemen,

I would like to introduce to you me, a former U.S. Marine. I served during the cold war era. And I would also like to introduce you to my 1942 Ford GPW, hood #20385883. On the cowl as per direction of Ron Fitzpatrick I found the letter "S"; which I was informed it symolized a radio supressed vehicle. With that said Ron also informed me that being a radio supressed vehicle meant that it was made by Ford sometime after June 8, 1942. The blue numbers on the hood were given to it at the Ford factory. After finally passing inspection it was delivered to the U.S. Army on June 9, 1943 as #20385883 and officially became active duty. I found it in a barn in Sherman, Texas. The young man that had it, couldn't aford to fix it. After he tore it into a million pieces he gave up his dream of restoring it. I picked it up on December 29, 2012 for $1,500 and brought it back to its new home in Tomball, Texas. I will make sure it gets back to its former glory. It will not be a trailer queen, but will be back in service. It will see parades, airshows, and lots of reenactments. Please see the registry for more info. :D

I wanted to add that at the time all I had was $1500.00 and I knew I wanted a real WWII Jeep. So where do you go to find something that cant be found? Yes, that's wright I Prayed asking the Lord Jesus to give me a real WWII Jeep, I told GOD all I have is $1500.00. The next day as I woke up he told me to go on Craigslist and told me to type Army jeep and there it was asking price $1500.00. Just wanted to let you guys know.

You need to get in touch with Thidisbogus and StirStik...they are both doing resto's on GPWs and both live in Magnolia. They might be of some help.

Myself, I'm in Jersey Village.

Great find and it's good to see another Marine in the hobby. I saw that one on Craigslist and almost went to take a look. I have 3 in my workshop, 2 being restored. I don't need any more. I will warn you now, it's an addiction. lol

Crazychevelleman,

Thank you for serving as a Marine.

Welcome to the G! Like The Gunny said I live in Magnolia right around the corner from you. Howard (StirStick) lives about five to ten minutes from me too. Looks like a good project. You aren't kidding, that young man took it all apart. Look forward to some more pictures.

Make sure and utilize jeepdraw for color references, photos and copies of the manuals for free.
Make sure and get some copies of the books All American Wonder by Ray Cowdery, Vol. I and II.
I would say make sure and label and put into sandwich bags everything you take off but it looks like the young man got ahead of you on that!

BTW what is your real first name?

You got it at a steal of a price. Half my frame and body were gone and it cost more than that.

Hello crazychevelleman,

From my GPW studies, Your GPW should have come from the Dallas, Tx. assembly plant. It would have been delivered on wheels rather than in a crate.

I hope this is of some help.

Hood number range 20384xxx though 20387xxx was assigned to the Dallas, Tx. assembly plant in the Summer of '43 for use on GPWs. The delivery on wheels comes from the data showing that there was no crating dept. at Dallas. Tx plant until August, '43. Data was found at the Benson Ford Research Center in Dearborn Mi.

On the cowl as per direction of Ron Fitzpatrick I found the letter "S"; which I was informed it symolized a radio supressed vehicle. With that said Ron also informed me that being a radio supressed vehicle meant that it was made by Ford sometime after June 8, 1942.
Not to contradict Ron, and possibly Tom W can weigh in here... My GPW12078, delivered in April, '42 from Dallas had a blue Drab "S" on the cowl indicating Suppression as well. I personally found the "S" and believe it to be factory applied as the font matches the confirmed hood number as well. My jeep is well before Ron's quoted timeline above.

The block was factory installed in CJ-2A number: 38611. A relatively early one, as CJ2a's go. I don't know much about the CJs.

I noticed the trans is a T90, and the T-case is also for a T90 with the large intermediate shaft, maybe out of the same CJ as the engine.
