GP Rebuild in the Great Wide Open
I started the rebuild of my fathers jeep to keep the old memorys alive. I gave the bug a name,i named it after my father. ( BILL ) or "The Old Man" A hunting rig for more than 40yrs,it set dormant 10yrs in the back of a automotive shop in a lube storage area. When i started this project a year and a half ago i new nothing of G 503 so i had no refernce to or access to what the original parts looked liked. Well i got the bug front clip off noticed someone got a little happy with a hot wrench, torched off gun mount and cover only the front 1/3rd,softball size hole in pass side, and a 3" long hole in engine compartment in fire wall right above motor, someone mounted wrong windscreen and mounts. Forward MARCH right behind jeep tub you can see the top of grandads dirt floor shop: a heck of a lot of extra holes in tub it appears to have had a full enclosed top at one time.

There were at least 6 coats of paint on the bug, hiding under the paint the nomenclature plate this is when i figured out what a GP was.A week or two later i noticed an add in the local newspaper for some kind of WWII reinactment lots of stuff going on at the VA-Hospital i figured i would snap a few pics of the bug and take them along,i walked up to a captian he had two vehicles a GPW and a 42 military ambulance Fred Harlow was his name i introduced myself and asked him if he had ever seen a jeep like mine, told me about the G , and to go to the library and try to research it.Someone mounted the brass windscreen catch pass side right over the nomenclature plate top left corner. Not getting any work done this way.So after a snow like this you have to get out there and shovel it all away as soon as you can,i give myself at least 6 feet outside of work area clearense all around,my complete work area will be dry in a day or two at the most.I don't know if any of you have been to Wyoming, but the wind constantly blows here useually 8 to 15 steady most all of the time, and at times 60 to 80mph,it's a very windy State to live in.Merry Christmas Foward MARCH

Re: GP-REBUILD/IN THE GREAT WIDE OPEN O YEA!!
Thanks Olav; Merry Christmas as well:Well i started teardown on B6371 Block it is not a true GP but casted the same as far as the fuel pump boss, further inspection i realize not only do i have one crack, ihave two cracks in the block. NICE So i stop dissasembley figuring block is not salvagable i start looking for a replacement motor,6 or 7 months later bingo i found a replacement a 1939 9N Ford Tracter motor. I bought a complete tractor it had a little oil blow-by i took a big chance here not knowing for sure if pan on GP block would bolt up,same for transfer case-trans bellhousing.Well im here to tell you it all bolts up just fine.So if you need a replacement motor untill you find a GP Block the 9N is your awnswer. Having a little fun with mock up the more i dress it up, the better i like it. SO i finished the front clip went ahead and bolted it up to see how it all was gonna look,i had found the windscreen in a junk yard it was on a purple willys i brought it home it mounted right up to some extra brackets already on the tub,it will be the doner windscreen for the GP i will modify to fit gp mounts. The seat i found in the weeds it has a f on it not sure what it fits,i will modify it to fit untill i get a GP seat. Forward March I was taught to use what you have so please don't get upset. Here you can see i kept the origanal angle floor pan support steel, was still in very good shape. I left small piece of hat channels so i new exzactly where the new hat channel would be installed.Fitting of the floor pan template took a lot measuring and remeasuring before cutting,I made template out of sheet tin rivited two pieces togather very affordable material if you mess up first your wallet won,t even fell it.
