GPW 86534 restoration.
...I´m Lucky. Tell you why.
A friend of a friend of mine who have been assembling jeeps without historical sense, owns an original GPW frame and body with tittle documents OK. And he would swap them for my M201 parts and tittle. I would give him my M201 frame with tittle and body.
I think this is my chance to own an original wartime G503. Well, I know that the rest of the parts as engine, gearbox, transfer, axles will be french but it will be a good starting point...after all my engine is running great!! I could swap my 24V electricals too.
I will go to see the parts this friday, I dont know its serial number still...he believe it is from 1942 or 43. Both frame and body were repaired some years ago so they wont be bad...hopefully.
All I have for now are some pics of the toe board gusset....they are Ford so it matchs the Ford frame. Is has the number 200640 stamped. Would it be enough to know the manufacturing year????
I enclose you some pics:
TIA!!!!

Re: Wow!!!!! GPW 86534 in sight.........(more pics)
Thank you.
At the end I couldnt wait untill friday And I was able to arrange a meeting with the owner today
I´m gladly surprised with the frame: GPW+86534+ clearly seen after a light sanding. December 1942 I think and it is in great shape, no bendings, only very light rust in some points where the paint went off and no strange repairings. And it has a tittle and license plate with all the documents OK. Here you are some pics..
Dirty but great
Serial number in detail
And a beautiful F
About the body....well, sadly it isnt a matching body because is a Ford ACMII with the number 200640 :
Ford tool lids with Willys type round depression
Note the rotary switch holes
Side channel and reinforcement
Very good hat channels!
Some other parts there: two hoods, the red is Ford, still with the grease gun holder on place, the green one is Willys and in very good condition. A black rubber steering wheel can be seen too:
Willys hood with deflector
The original OD under paint coats
The owner doesnt mind to make a change with my M201 frame and body....the result for me would be and original Ford frame and body but with the rest components from my M201...a kind of Frankenstein, I know but is a begining.
I would like to change the electrical components too but he havent any 6 or 12V jeep electricals to trade with and they are very expensive for me at the moment so the only option would be to keep the 24V system BUT there is no room for the second battery.
In the other hand I dont know what to do with this project.... keep the motorpool restoration with unmatching frame/body or try to transform the ACMII in a 1942 Ford type body....I dont like the idea of transfom a 1945 original body...
Well..I would like to know your opinions, inputs...any help welcomed.
TIA
Regards

Hi Rodrigo,
That is a tough decision. Myself if time were not as precious as money I think I would take the Ford frame and body. That way you have an original and can then replace components like the electrical, transmission, engine etc as you can afford it or come across them and in the meantime still drive a "real" WW2 jeep.

In Italy there is a fairly strong bias against jeeps with a French accent so my answer reflects this.
I would have no doubts in trading!
Once you have the jeep, I would first restore the frame, and wait to touch the body.
In the meantime, you might be able to source a real pure Ford tub, and sell the composite tub that appeals to both Willys and Ford owners needing a composite tub.
if not successful then you can decide otherwise.

Re: Wow!!!!! GPW 86534 in sight.........(MORE pics)
Thank you lads.
I´ve had a meeting with the owner today to talk about the possible trading I´m I haveto say that...
I´m VERY lucky!
After some minutes checking my jeep he said YES, I will trade!
I was able to look more deeply the frame and body...here you are some pics:
Another wiew of the frame
And a wiev of the original parts collected there and grouped together into the body: Grille, front fenders, front bumper, winshied, inner windshield, gas tank, front seats, hood, early spare tire bracket...
My brother showing the hood
Hood
Gas tank
OLACO stamping.....original? repro? Willys? Ford???????????? Please, help with this.
Spare tire support
Driver seat
Passenger seat with its footman loops
F stamped on the back ofthe seats
Grille
Rear reinforcements
Windshield
Inner windshied
A lot of dust but frame, body and parts in good condition. Only right fender needs a little bit of work.
I still cant believe it.
In two weeks we will start swaping the parts (he have not room enough at the moment).
Cheers

Rodrigo, your new name is "Lucky"....
The gas tank looks to be an original OLACO. Check to see if there is a flat, round strainer one the gas pick up tube on the bottom of the lower part of the tank....about 100-130mm in diameter....this would be for LATE jeeps without the fuel strainer on the firewall. Some tanks have a script "F" on the guage mounting surface between where the the screws go...I do not think yours would have had that, but please check.

Hey Rodrigo
I too would like to congratulate you. That looks to be a very good project that you've managed to negotiate looks like the body retains some original features. The ax handle bracket looks original(check for the little 'f') as well as late tool locker lids. Anyway great project as i said
regards Nick
