Adding the bolt-ons is a fun part of the 503 picture isn't it? Are these the 'before' pictures?

Hi Ralph! Yes they are definitely the "before" pictures. I am wondering if I should paint the axe handle and the shovel handle OD or oil the wood.

Hard to tell from the pics....is the wood already VARNISHED? Has it been sanded and had Linseed Oil or Boiled Linseed Oil rubbed into it? Were they just sanded and had a stain applied to them?
I painted the steel a flat black and then sanded mine and put on BLO on the wood and they look great. If they are really dinged up, have black stains or otherwise look bad then you can probably just paint them OD or OD with flat black on the steel.
Up to you....

Good ideas Chuck. I will have to take a closer look. Thanks for the input!
I am assuming that they made it into the field both painted and non-painted?

I believe they made it to the field with BLO on them and once in the motorpool, they would be treated by the book, how the Colonel wished or, depending on what was available to use.

If one browses thru enough SNL's it will be discovered that the 41A-1277 Axe will be described as having plain or painted handles. These Axes were universal to the WWII Army for not only mounting on wheeled and tracked vehicles, they were issued as equipment issued for use with all branches.
