MV insurance in SC
HI Guys,
Anybody else in SC? Who do you insure with? I noticed that several of the companies that do "antique" insurance don't cover South Carolina. Also more generally, do you use an anitque specialty policy or something else like recreational rider on a regular policy. Startin to get serious as the prices come down, so I gotta fill in the blanks before I find the vehicle. I should mention that I had MVs when I lived in PA and always used the same companies without a problem.

All insurance hinges on the same thing:
Your driving record
The value of the vehicle, if you want collision
How much damage can it do in an accident
How bad can it get damaged in an accident
Does it have more horsepower than the driver has brains
How often will it be on the road
Your current insurance company can probably give you the best rate, if they will insure it. Problem is, you have to carry the same limits of liability on it as on any other car on your policy. If you don't want theft, comp, or collision on it, I would think it's pretty cheap. If they can't do it, they will probably know someone who can.

Re: MV insurance in SC
Hi Tom,
I'm down near Charleston, SC and my normal auto insurance is through USAA. They could have insured my jeep, but if I recall the conversation correctly, it would have been insured based off of the government's purchase price back in 1945. I told them it wouldn't do and that I had more invested in it just between the canvas and tires than what they would have insured it for! They referred me to another company that deals with antiques and collectibles: American Modern Insurance Company. I believe this policy now might be considered a rider off of my USAA policy now. My glovebox card doesn't have a website, but the claim telephone number is 1 800 543 2644. They could direct you to somebody with some more information.
My policy is pretty cheap, but technically I am not supposed to drive more than something like 300 miles a year. When it came time for renewal, I just sent a check and they never asked.
On the flip side, I just bought a beat up M37 and the American Modern guys said they couldn't insure it yet because of its condition! I haven't checked with USAA, yet. But I am sure they will do it, but not at much value!
Hope this helps,
Bo

Thanks guys,
both of those companies are new to me. That gives me some options and when the vehicle of my dreams shows up, I'll be ready.

USAA is only for military or those with a direct military connection. Used to be for Officers only, I have USAA because my wife joined after she received her commission.hbtcoveralls wrote:Thanks guys,

Re: MV insurance in SC
Bo, I use USAA for my MB - they apparently told me a different story than they did you? Mine is insured for "actual cash value": I produce my value estimate, USAA produces theirs, and if we agree we're done. Otherwise it goes to a 3rd party. That's a risky path for custom vehicles, but there's enough market churn on these that I'm not worried about it. I use the same approach for my '65 corvette too. I've insured the corvette this way with USAA for over 26 years now.
The alternative (with USAA) is a pre-agreed valuation, but at the loss of general usability.
