I think Palnuts are probably what I'd call captive nuts...they are encased in metal but move around a little? Yes there were some of those on the underside.

No, Palnuts are different than captive nuts. Captive nuts are, as you describe, captive. Palnuts are actually nuts made out of stamped steel & are used as a locking device for the nut that actually does the work of clamping the part.

Very nice. What shad of OD did you go with? Looks like semi-gloss?

The only place I saw these was on the nuts in the engine for the main piston rods. I was advised by several respected Jeep dealers not to reuse them as they can work lose.

Its a satin olive drab, I chose this one because its slightly closer to the darker shade that was used on British Jeeps.

I agree that in a connecting rod application I would not re-use them, but would install new ones, but in todays world most folks would omit them & use loc-tite instead.

I just tuned in to this thread and must say that you have a great project there. I can see that the amount of work you are going to will pay off in the end. Another WWII jeep will be fully restored. Look forward to more pics and story.

Well we are way overdue for some updates. As we all like pictures I will let them do the talking. Mostly in 2013.

Coming along nicely. Like that you are keeping lots of the character of the jeep still on it. (not taking out all the dents and such).

The thing that jumps out at me concerning this nice restoration is the fact that this guy is doing it in very confined conditions and apparently doing every bit of the many facets of restoration himself. I applaud your saving yet another of these tired old girls. This thread reminds me so much of my first GPW. Please keep us posted on this project as these are the ones I love rather than the high dollar nuts and bolts correct restorations that so many of us get wrapped up in. My last GPW that I have just recently finished is so nice that my adult son made me promise to not crank it again since my test running of the rebuild. He even said he would buy an enclosed trailer to put it in. Since my joy is in the work putting them back together, whatever he wants is fine with me. You sir will never again experience the joy that this jeep is bringing you. Alan

Those are very kind words guys thank you, very inspirational.

The single garage is indeed cramped and a challenge but that just motivates me more, I enjoy overcoming all challenges whether on or off the vehicle.

This was indeed a nut and bolt restoration, even the dials came apart. Only thing I didn't do was the machine work on the engine block, this went to a specialist who hot washed, bored and skimmed it. A good friend kindly helped me rebuild the engine to the correct tolerances.

Hello Wolfy.

Great project, love seeing these old girls being rebuilt, from the start, and seeing how people go about fixing them, what they are fitting/using. You show a picture showing the hood number been stamped in to the chassis. I have also got my hood number stamped on the chassis but it is left side front chassis leg. I have asked experts and long time jeep owners/rebuilders. have been looking on the internet for a while (that's how I found your pictures). No one has a idea why it has been done. Have you got any theories why? Look forward to seeing the rest of your project

Regards Clint

1942 MB Restoration - The End.

Post by Wolfy » Mon Feb 16, 2015 12:13 pm

:D Thanks guys.

Clint I did put a posting here with a bit of info - viewtopic.php?f=85&t=165578

Also my Jeep had an original wavy inventory plate on the dash which you can see in the 4th photo on my glovebox -

Close to the end now -

I used 3 inch seat bases instead of 2 inch for comfort. Also the keen eyed will notice I have 4 inches in the seat as I'm 6'4" tall, it really makes a difference. I cut a repro seat rather than an original.

Markings are my Grandfathers Royal Artillery Unit - 31 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, 224 Battery. They represent a Sub Alterns Jeep (second in command) which would have been used by the troop as general purpose vehicle and almost certainly driven by my Grandfather whos service trade was a driver towing a Bofors 40mm gun.

Image

In June 2014 we travelled in convoy to Normandy with 120 other WW2 vehicles for the D-Day 70th anniversary to remember all those who fought for our freedom. An amazing unforgettable experience and a fitting milestone to finish off this restoration thread. This is why we do it.
