7th war bond poster

Post by Derrick19 » Sun Jan 18, 2015 9:09 pm

Hello all. Would anyone have a idea of the value of this size poster ? It is 40"x "60. Its kinda a train wreck but I'm thinking of getting it restored but don't know the value. If it is worth more than the restoration I will probably get it fixed. It is a great poster and I would imagine that it was put in front of a movie theater or large store front.

They sell repros but, I do not know how much an original in restored condition goes for. Yours is different than the one I found but, this might help with the graphics. Oh, the value usually depends on the buyers want or need of that item. (Hope I wasn't being Captain Obvious?)

Derrick,
I'm sure it's a very hard poster to find in that size, but the size is a factor in its value, along with its condition. Framing will be very expensive. Around here, a poster that size might cost at least $400 to properly mat and frame. Condition is very bad with so much of the edges missing. Do you have a space that large to hang it when it's framed? It's size actually hinders it's value, since so many people don't have space for a poster that big.

I'd say, if you like it enough, get it linen mounted and framed and enjoy it. It surely is one of the largest WWII posters I've ever seen and a truly great subject matter.

Thanks for the response Steve. I can find a wall to hang it on. But it is very expensive to get fixed. I was quoted alittle over $500 just to fix the missing paper, another $175 to linen back and then the frame and mounting. Probably would be in excess of $1000 all said and done. Oh well.

This site had 40 x 60 war bond posters going for $1000.

They had an original of your poster but in 9 x 12.8 format for $175.

Thoses of us that have restored military vehicles from WWII have more in them in parts and labor than we can ever get out by selling them. I'ts a labor of love and a tribute to the greatest generation that we do this.
Same with your poster. It would be a "push" to restoe and frame this for what it would be worth in dollars and cents to a collector. Just as with vehicles, part of the "character" of this poster is it's condition. I would think of just having it properly mounted with the proper glass and acid free mat so it does not get any worse and find a place of honor to display it.

Interesting poster. It seems the large size was due to the fact that these were printed to be displayed inside movie theaters along side the "coming attractions" posters. So it is almost like a movie theater card or poster in that regard. The smaller size was more displayed in stores and banks that actually sold the bonds. The 7th war loan drive was right after the surrender of Germany and the war office had a fear that most Americans thought the fighting was over and the loan money would dry up. So this drive used a rendering of the famous photograph of the flag raising to bring the Japanese war into the forefront.
Being the size was for movie theaters, I don't know if this adds or detracts from any vlaue as I don't kow if it makes it rarer or not.

Double edged sword with the size. Might make it rarer, but less desirable to collectors due to the wal space needed. And museums that would normally find the room to display something like this would want the condition to be almost perfect.

Something for the man cave, I would think. As is.

I'm not sure how much value is here. In it's current condition, it's value is negatively effected significantly unless it's so rare that condition is overlooked. However, if you restore it, it's my opinion that you negate any value it would have had.

Framing is kinda a detractor too. If I, as a potential buyer, don't like the frame you put it in, than it doesn't matter to me how much you paid for it, to me, it would have to be re-framed, so that brand new, expensive frame you bought is worthless. It is also probably difficult to sell a custom frame. That would entail finding someone who LIKES the frame AND has a peice which would fit the dimensions. I doubt a frame shop would allow any "trade in value" on the old frame, as cutting it up to re-use is probably more costly than building a new frame.

You are between a rock and a hard place, sorry.

I think I will have this poster linen backed to help stop the deterioration. I can make my own frame. I also found a mat for $15 and they will cut it for me. Still about $275 for all this but it has a cool factor and I like it. Thanks for all the comments and advice. Will post pictures when I am done.

Everything you use should be acid free and archival quality if you intend to preserve it.
