M151a1 throttle cable retaining nut

Post by CAV pilot » Sun Feb 11, 2018 5:51 pm

I just became the owner of a 1968 M151a1 and need to replace the throttle cable. Does one fight their way through the miles of wire behind the dash that my hand can barely navigate or am I missing a different access. Thanks in advance.

CAV Pilot,

I replaced the hand throttle on my '67 M151A1 last summer, what a PITA! Here's what I did -

1. Remove the Driver's seat assy.
2. Disconnect the throttle/accelerator return spring in the engine compartment.
3. Remove the two bolts on the floor board, that secure the Accelerator pedal.
4. Open up the instrument panel to gain access to the nut that secures the hand throttle to the dash, and loosen.
5. Lay upside down under the dash, and loose the slotted retaining screw, remove the cable stop nut, and hand throttle.

Note: I could only get one hand under the dash, so I ended up replacing the slotted retaining screw with a hex head screw on reassembly. If you don't, the cable stop nut with the slotted screw just spins around the throttle cable, you can't get any leverage. With the hex head screw, you can keep the cable stop nut from spinning around the hand throttle cable while tightening with one hand.

Good Luck,

Joe in La Pine

That nut is a3/8" NF and takes a 9/16" Wrench. Gear Wrench has some cute ratcheting Box end Wrenches in short and long lengths that may make the task easier.
Remember to disconnect the batteries when behind the dash of your MUTT, 24 Volts make crispy insulation in a split second.
