broken tip of clutch support. ok to use motor?

Post by steveperryman » Mon Jul 31, 2017 3:42 pm

Hi all, I am looking to swap a a2 motor into an a1 chassis. The a2 motor looks good except for a chunk taken out of the back of the clutch support. Can anyone tell me if this will be a problem? I like the motor and want to use it, the original just had 2 exhaust manifold bolts snap in the block...

The photos are too large to attach, so I'll link them below

is there a machine shop available to you, that has the ability to repair that casting? i would be a little bit leery about using that, but i readily admit i'm no expert. when i had similar damage on a harley engine, i had a shop repair it first.

As long as the bushings stay in the hole without wanting to fall out you should be alright. The clutch force id forward towards the front of the support so the broken part does not play into that. It is not structural so any decent weldor should be able to fill that in a little just to be sure.

Great, thanks. How do you get the clutch shaft out if the old motor? I've removed the sleeve on the far end, and the shaft seems to not budge... Just muscle it out? or better to pull the shaft after the motor is removed from the jeep?

It should come out with a little effort, probably stuck in bushing.

As was said if clutch shaft will stay in place then that's fine.
If notbthen repair is necessary:
The bushings on A1s should be bronze.that may cause them to stick in place.
A2s are nylon and more slipoery and easier to remove.
Look at the parts manual to see what you have and assemble accordingly.
Dont know if parts are interchangeable:
