Tech Help

Post by snipertn » Thu Dec 08, 2016 3:03 am

I am looking at a trailer to haul a M151A2 on behind my CUCV or my pickup . I need to know what the width at the front wheels , length and weight of a 1970 M151a2 is . I have tried to find this info without bothering you guys but I cant seem to find it . I also need to know what the wheel base length front to rear is for this particular trailer .

Any help would be great , thanks .

You should have a data plate attached to the passengers side rear fender well in front with all of that info on it. If you do not have it then it will be in the -10 operators manual. If you do not have the manuals go to the g838.org site and you can get them for free.

You must be looking at a single axle trailer, just about any tandem axle can handle a small vehicle like a 151. Well, you may be modifying a boat trailer to carry one I guess. Single axle is not a good idea for a vehicle trailer for balance reasons. You have to be very accurate to get the 10% tongue weight on a single axle and if a tire blows with the relatively high center of gravity of a vehicle and usually shorter trailer drawbar as opposed to a boat you are looking at a good chance of losing control.

I was looking at a previous Mil 10+ kw generator trailer . I already have a set of heavy duty ramps that will more than handle the weight of the MUTT. I could also use it to haul my zero turn lawn mower and other things for the honey do list . I will have to modify the width between the wheel wells if I purchase the trailer but I have a friend who can help and advise on the mods if i get one of the trailers.

That is a 116 trailer and it is going to be pretty high to drive up on and very high as far as center of gravity on a single wheel trailer with a short tongue. There was one that was up for auction on e-bay and it popped up on the 838 a couple times that was very heavily modified specifically for a 151. It looked like a well done setup since it lowered the whole vehicle down to axle level. It is your trailer but I think you ought to do some serious research into it before trying to get a 151 onto it.

Here is a link to the one that was for sale originally on Gov-ligudation. I don't know how long this link will be good since the auction ended a long time ago.

CLEANING FUEL TANK AND LINES

Post by snipertn » Wed Dec 28, 2016 4:34 am

You guys that have been restoring these MUTTs for awhile I need some advice . The MUTT that i'm about to buy if I can get it running needs a fuel tank cleaning as well as the lines . The tank has old fuel that has turned to varnish and i'm sure that the lines are clogged also .
What can I use to clean the tank and lines to get it started . I have pretty much decided that this will take a little time and i'm prepared to take on the task . I really want this vehicle but I don't want to dump a fortune in it as i' simi retired and on a limited income .

If there is a product that I can dump into the tank to slosh it arround while I'm hauling in the 100 miles to my home to help break and dissolve the old gas in the tank .

Any ideas will be very helpful .

Alcohol or acetone. Acetone would be best but the amount needed to "Slosh around while driving" would be expensive. But be aware that the tank may have holes in it below the varnish and as the solvent works it could start coming out while you are driving down the road.

I think the tank is still a serviceable tank, (I hope ) . I was thinking that acetone would work but wasn't sure . Maybe 3 or 4 gallons would do as the tank appears to only have about 3 - 8 gallons in it .

Thanks for the info .

When I rebuilt my M37 I took the tank to a radiator shop and had them hot tank it to clean it out. When it came out it was spotless bare metal and needed a coat of primer immediately to keep it from starting to rust. The moisture in the air will start rusting raw steel within minutes of it's coming out of a thorough cleaning. The EPA had shut down a lot of these shops with caustic tanks but you may still find one where you live. I'd recommend an internal coating of POR-15 to seal any holes that might be in the tank and that'll help keep it healthy for years.

Kurt , is the POR 15 a rubber coating , or something else ? Where would be a good place to find it ?
