Fuel pump pressure/ carb woes?
I went to start my 1964 M151A1 this evening and it wouldn't idle, had to have throttle to stay running. It smelled rich, was misfiring, and had black exhaust. I looked at the carb and fuel was coming out from where the fuel line meets the carb (actually the large bolt on the carb just above where the line goes in). I took the fuel bowl off the carb to see if the float was stuck, but no it was fine. I don't have an inline pressure gauge for the fuel flow, but is it possible the fuel pump is malfunctioning and sending too much fuel pressure to the carb? Of note, lately on all hot starts I need to keep my foot all the way down on the accelerator just as if it was flooded to get it to start. Also, after the engine stalls, I can still hear the fuel pump ticking away until I turn the ignition switch off. I cannot seem to find a fuel pump replacement anywhere (electric in tank type). Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Re: Fuel pump pressure/ carb woes?
I have never heard of these pumps putting out too much pressure. It sounds lie your needle is grooved or the float is damaged or set to high. In any case the gas should not come out at that fitting so ether it is loose or the gasket is bad. As far as the pump running after it stalls the only possible way that will happen is if the oil pressure safety switch is bad or if it has been bypassed.

I see what you are saying. I am going to start by putting a pressure gauge on the fuel line today and see what happens. I did look at the float last night and it wasn't stuck, but I didn't see where it was set (and frankly I don't know how to se it)
Maybe cleaning the carb will help? The seals all look good as it was rebuilt only about 8 yrs ago

The float setting is 9/32 from the float edge to the gasket with the top inverted. The procedure is in the -20 manual. If you do not have the manual they are available for free down load on the g838.org site.

Re: Fuel pump pressure/ carb woes?
Thanks for the help. Turns out it was the needle/ seat assembly that wasn't sealing properly. I had a spare carb I threw in and it worked fine. is there a place to just buy a needle/ seat for a zenith carb? Maybe a float too?

The needle and seat are included in the large rebuild kit. The float you will have to look around for.

Re: Fuel pump pressure/ carb woes?
I haven't really followed the dealers recently to see who has what but there is always E-Bay. Just do a search for "M-151 carburetor rebuild kit" and look for a large kit of if it has pictures just look for jets and needles and seats. That will be a large kit.

CargoVoyage,
If you haven't found the carb kit or parts yet, they are available from Norfar.com
They are new manufactured parts from the original maker. I just ordered two rebuild kits, part # K2167 for the Zenith carb.
They also sell the floats.
