Clutch Linkage Question

Why would the clutch return spring come off? I realize that other than spring tension, there's nothing holding the linkage end. I'm assuming that the darn thing simply broke. Guess I'll just order a new one. By the way, is this a common occurrence? If so, maybe I should order two.
