Tyres

Post by Chuckm » Thu Mar 03, 2016 7:28 pm

OK, it finally happened, my tires have more air showing than rubber!!

I am wondering what tires to get. I am looking at regular "GI" tires or going with something with a light truck tred.

What I am looking for is how long they will last driving on Pavment. I have used GI tires and had them go bald within about 3 years of use. That was when I drove my 151 to work about 60 miles a day.

When I was in the NV Guard we were told that the GI tire was a "softer rubber tire" for off road use and not for long ware on pavement. I have NO idea if that is true or not but it is what we were told. We changeds the tires on our 151s about every 2 years.

Due to the cost of tires nowdays, I don't want to jump without aking what you are using and have found that lasts.

Thanks,

Have been running LT 215s on my A2s for probably 15 years and they have been great.
Good tread wear and much quieter.
Dont use P series tires because they can be wobbly and 151s are squirrely enough.

Chuck, Did you mean pneumaticos? I think you can only get tyres in England.

Chuck one good option might be to run with the LT's and have a military spare if you want a military look topside. Most people will assume that that's what the tires look like and will not stoop down to look. I run the LT's on my M416 trailer and it ran/handled fine on a trip from Minnesota and Georgia. Bob

Funny you mentioned that, I have a new Goodyear mounted on the back as a spare.
Hate to think what it would be like to ride with it place.

Thanks for the information! One question, which LT215 do you like? Any preference to Manufacture ?

I will look some up and see what I can find, what is the rest of the type eg: LT215/??/16? I think it is R85, but correct me if I am wrong.

Again many thanks, it would be nice to have a good set of tires for T.P.

Been using a set of Cooper Discoverer tires LT 215 85 R16.
A friend f mine is using a set of Michelins with a less agressive tread and they are also very good.

If you're looking for the real deal military tread tires, these seem pretty reasonable:

To me, the MUTT just doesn't look military without the military tires. YMMV.

That is the wrong size and wrong profile. The 151 uses 7.00-16 NDCC. There is no reason you can't use NDT's, just pointing that out for accuracy purposes.

I have these on my jeep:

LT215/85R-16 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac E

They fit perfectly and the jeep drives really well with them. They're the same tires that are being used on the Growler jeeps that the Marine Corps is now using. They'll certainly last longer than non directional tires, maybe more than 10,000 miles. I changed from a new set of non directionals which showed more than 50% tread wear after 3000 miles.

You can buy them here.
