This is a link to a military pamphlet about troubleshooting military charging systems that I thought I'd post for the forum:

I know this DA PAM 750-33 way to well. It has sve me a lot of time and $'s to boot. I have the original of it. Not many survied and was going to the recycle bin when I rescued mine. I don't know if this is a PDF file of mine but will look at it at work and can tell with marks I put in mine.

A note! When I try to down load it has errors and won't fully down load.lten1063 wrote:I know this DA PAM 750-33 way to well. It has sve me a lot of time and $'s to boot. I have the original of it. Downloaded and saved fine for me. I have a pretty fast connection though.

Re: Charging system troubleshooting
The error is a "ROOT DIRCTORY/FILE IS MISSING" or something like that.

Re: Charging system troubleshooting
Hello I put 2 new batteries in my 151a2 drove it alternator started whining then gauge pegged in the red volt meter showed 36 volts way to much. Tried to adjust did not work bought new regulator same result it is a 60 amp unit with regulator that attaches to back of alternator. Was working good till batteries went bad. Did notice when hooking up new batts got a arc when connecting ground like a draw on system everything was turned off. Wondering if the alternator has some internal short. Any feedback would be much appreciated thanks Doug

Re: Charging system troubleshooting
Are you sure you hooked the batteries in series and not in parallel? And did you get the polarity correct? Always go back to the last thing you did and that was the batteries. You said it was fine before the batteries and then you had a spark hooking the batteries up. Makes me think something in the connection of the batteries is wrong.

Re: Charging system troubleshooting
ARE 151 REGULATORS ADJUSTABLE?
My 151A1 quit charging. Generator tested ok. Got two "take-offs" from Red River that did not work.
Third one put out low current as measured at the dash gauge. Deflected about two needle widths into green.
My good regulator deflected about 3/4 up into the green.

Re: Charging system troubleshooting
They are only adjustable up or down a volt or two. It sounds like the DOA generator you got from Red River may have needed polarizing maybe? Other than brushes there is very little to go wrong in the 25 amp generator. You need to check the voltages at the batteries with it running at high idle with a real voltmeter, never believe the dash gauges until they are verified with real instruments. The dash gauges are notorious for being wrong. Also be sure the batteries are both in good condition and well charged.

I was sending that to Kurt Lesser. His wife was coordinating the camping spaces for the MVCC swap meet in Northern Cal. A great lady!

Re: Charging system troubleshooting
Darn meant to ask how to make the adjustment. I saw a pot with a screwdriver slot on the circuit board.

Re: Charging system troubleshooting
You must be working with the later electronic regulator. One of the guys on the g838 did some testing on those and found that one screw was the voltage adjustment and the other was the tip in adjustment. One thing he found was that different years and manufacturers out the screws in different spots so basically all he does is adjust one a half turn and see if it changes the voltage. If it does not he returns it to the original position and tries the other one. I have never done this myself since mine is working fine but if it ever craps out I have six spares to play with.

How does one flash the generator (the type with the waterproof cannon plug)?

I just checked on eBay. Found the same Pamphlet for $10.00. Bought it just now.
A great book for my 151 collection.
