Need help With A2 Year and Serial #

Postby renovate7 » Mon Oct 31, 2011 5:45 am

I have an A2 due to be delivered today. Pretty happy about this, I haven't had a MUTT for 3 years. It is arriving without a Title. I need to come up with a serial number and also will post some pics to see if the Board can help me identify the year. I found a serial number of 02HU8270-336XX on an A2 for sale on the net. Can anybody tell me if this is an appropriate number? Do parts of it identify year made etc? I will change a few of the #'s so we don't have 2 vehicles that are the same.

Remember that this number will be entered into a national database and no matter what numbers you chose there is a fair possibility that it could match someone else's number and will throw a red flag. That would be bad! It would not only be you but they would investigate the other person also to see who lied. I know I would be more than a little pissed if I were the other person!

Thanks Rick I'm definately watching for that. 8 months ago I registered an M35A3 that had the same 6 digit serial number as an old mobile home somewhere here in Florida. After much discussion amongst themselves at DMV they let it go. There are now 2 vehicles in Florida with the same serial number...The A2 is due here anytime. I'll get some pics posted when the sun comes out. Does the sequence of numbers/letters above look correct? Any importance to them individually?

I am not really up on the numbering sequence of the A2's so I will defer to those in the know. If you want to check on the g838.org site I think this has come up in the past.

That floor drain is confusing, they used them on the early A2's and all of the A1's. Around 71 they went to side scupper drains in the side panels. Because of the emissions stuff I would guess around 73 and up. Have you found the body tag? Either dead center of the cowl just under the edge of the hood if it is a Ford. (Rare for an A2) Inside on the transmission tunnel behind the fuel lines. Be VERY careful with that one since a lot of them are just a foil tag and damage very easily. They are usually covered in paint if they are there. If you can find one of those tags then you can send the numbers to Ken the Muttguru and he can give you a pretty close date of manufacture.

I haven't found a tag in either location. Is there any other possible location that a number could be found? This also has the side drains. I think I may just use the engine serial number for a VIN. It's only 5 digits. I really just care about getting a good title. I'm going to stop at the DMV today, they are very helpful and understanding (at least this one office) and make sure this # doesn't already exist. Way back when mobile homes, and I can only assume other wheeled items, had serial #'s that were all over the place. I also think before computers you may have had vehicles made in different states with the same number...I registered on g.838 yesterday. It looks like it may be the "go to" site for 151 owners.

There is one other spot you can check but I think, not sure, that it was only A1's that had it here. Top of the frame rail under the radiator. Or somewhere real close but on top of the rail. Again, these are foil tags so if it is there and covered in paint it will be hard to find and very fragile.

Renovate, what you have is an AM General-built M151A2, between 1973-77. The datalate you were interested in belonged to a Ford-built M151A2 dated 1970. They are both from A2s....but different manufacturers and eras.
Kind regards...

Well...I was able to get a title and an antique plate today! The bill of sale from the seller, on his states DMV letterhead, sufficed. We used the 5 digit engine # as the VIN and titled it as a 1977. I took a blank Mutt data plate to a local trophy shop and had this # engraved in it, then reinstalled it. I had a Sheriff come by and sign a verification of VIN form. Took the bill of sale, vin verification and proof of insurance to the Tag Agency and 20 minutes later was a happy person. What could have been a big headache is now in the rear view mirror.
