M151A2 CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT
I am a newbee. I just purchased a M151A2 and have not gotten any manuals yet. Can anyone explain to me how to adjust the clutch. It grabs at the end of the travel or what could be considered the top of the pedal. Also, any suggestions on which manuals I need and where to get them.

The first place you should look for 151 manuals is http://www.g838.org/added_pages/manuals.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. My clutch grabs at the end of travel too and I've been told that the problems is most likely the type of clutch installed rather than any kind of adjustment.

Allan,
Francis is right on both points. You need to download the TMs BEFORE you do any work on the vehicle (not after, when something has gone wrong !).
And the clutch issue features regularly on the Boards. Have a look at my post on the G503 at:-
http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.ph ... 4&start=15" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
where you can see pictures of both types of clutch disk.
Hope this helps........

I can't believe that there is no clutch adjustment. It doesn't look hard to make it adjustable and think I might modify mine. Thanks for the information.

No adjustment? Where did you get that from? The clutch on a 151 is adjustable.

As said, get the manual first, there it is explained. That rod coming out of the bell housing has a thread. Disconnect it at the point where the return spring is attached and turn it in or out depending on which direction you have to go.

Re: M151A2 CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT
Horst is right, also if you turn it out too far you will unscrew it from the adjuster and then most likely have to pull the lower cover to get it back together. Go to the G838.org, the manuals are there for free download.
Have you checked all of the pivot points in the linkages for wear?

Re: M151A2 CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT
Thank you gentlemen. I did go to the manuals and thank you for the web page. Since it is adjustable, not mentioned in the manuals or the forum much, do you put up with it grabing at the end of the travel? I understand the two types of clutchs etc. and when a clutch needs replacing. I have been a mechanic both on cars and airplanes for over fifty years

Re: M151A2 CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT
Allen, The clutch should be able to be adjusted within the normal range. I would try to screw that rod in a couple turns at a time until you get the proper free play at the pedal. At that point it should engage further down. If you have the ceramic style clutch they are very grabby, they are basically in or out with not much slip to them. I prefer my clutch to engage closer to the floor than the specs so I adjust it accordingly. If you can't get the engagement further down in the range then there might be a bent linkage or worn flywheel. I just pulled mine and I can tell you that the ceramic clutch ate the flywheel!

Re: M151A2 CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT
Rick,
Thanks for the information. I will work with it this weekend. It has been raining cats and dogs for three days here in SoCal and I have it under a carport right now. If I don't get the feel and action from the clutch that i want I will replace it. Have you ever heard of anyone having a clutch disc and presuure plate custom made for a M151? They don't cost that much.

Re: M151A2 CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT
Allan, I never heard of a custom clutch. There is really no need since the originals are readily available. I am replacing my flywheel, along with a clutch set from the A1 which uses a fiber disc instead of the ceramic puck.

Re: M151A2 CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT
Allan,
As I remember there were two different clutch discs used in the 151 jeeps. One had a full circle of friction material and the other have 3 (?) pads on it. I believe that was often referred to as the suicide clutch because it was either engaged or disengaged and there was very little "slip" room on the pedal stroke. Something else that could affect the clutch would be if someone had it relined and the wrong friction material was used.
