REAR DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
When driving in 4th gear, there is a quite loud buzzing noise in the back of my the M151A2, coming i guess from the read drive or differential. The oil level is OK.
Can any one help? Thank. Carlos

Re: REAR DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
I once had a buzzing noise coming from the rear (of the truck!), and only in 4th gear.
I first thought it was the differential, and swapped it out for a good used one, but still had the same noise.
Tried another differential, and again, nothing changed.
This is when i noticed that the noise was there only in 4th gear, this made me think that if it wasn't there in the other gears, the differential could not be the cause.
So i swapped out the transmission, and the noise was gone.
This was about 25 years ago, when you could buy differentials and transmissions for less than scrap price.
Many people have problems with noises coming from the rear floor, but often it's not the differential causing it.
The differential is just transmitting the noise that comes from the transmission through the driveshaft, since it is bolted directly, metal to metal, to the body, without any rubber insulators. The power pack, instead, is mounted on rubber, so no vibration or noise is transmitted there.
I suspect the countershaft is vibrating, due to loose bearings maybe, as it does not transmit any power in 4th gear.

Re: REAR DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
Dear stb,
I do highly appreciate your clear, extense and accurate opinion regarding my problem with the M151A2 Mutt. It will certainly help my mechanic to focus directly on the transmision and avoid losing his time and my money. Unfortunately, here in Barcelona, Spain I will have problems finding a transmission but will try to check the one that is in the car.
Again thanks for your kind assistance

Don't know how long you have owned your jeep....one thing to think about before you start swapping out parts is that all Military vech's make a lot of noise, they were not made for comfort, if possible, you need to ride in another 151 to compare the noise, yours may be normal,....just a thought.

Re: REAR DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
I have made the following modification at the rear differential base. I had drill larger hole at the three differential base and i have insert the silent block of the engine pack.
Here is the photos ...
The silent block of the engine has rubber inside the hole of the screw , so any noise of the drive shaft (transmission ) or the rear differential stay out of the car body.

Re: REAR DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
That is the best idea I have seen yet short of major modifications. It completely isolates the bolt from the metal. The only problem is once you do it there is no return!

George. The driveshaft doesn't get to the rear arm if you lower the diff not more than 4cm...the rubbers is only 2cm , also , due to the lower angle of driveshaft working, is better for the u-joint's.

Re: REAR DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
George....At the past , had a different spacer (at 4cm by er-talon) between the rear differential and the body base , as you can see at the photo. For the reason than the er-talon didn't isolate the noise of the gears from the body , removed and add the above modification. Also with the 4cm of er-talon , the drive shaft doesn't hit the rear arm of the suspension...
<<did you get the arm fully up without the spring ??>>
Why are you going to remove the rear spring, is it possible to drive the jeep off road without the spring ??? Of course if you remove it, the drive shaft will hit the rear arm'
Also, i must tell you that my rear shock absorber is the U.S MADE ,RANCHO RS 5000 , dual action .

Re: REAR DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
If you could get a part number off of that shock absorber I am sure a lot of people would appreciate it. Rancho 5000's are good shocks.

Re: REAR DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
The shock absorber was paint it black and also I have made a shim holder on the upper and lower rings of them, to insert the same bolts that the m151 has.
So , I find my old post here.....I'm coming back again, I use Rancho RS 5000 SERIES absorber and especially RS 5120 C350W1 in my M151A2 with a small modification in
the holder rings. Please see the photos below. A friend of mine uses it in a M151A1.
On the front shock absorber i use MONROE R1504 made in EU.

please, can you explain a little more about the shim holders / spacers that you have used to make the Rancho 5120 fit the A2?
Are they washers? Or a different rubber bushing with a bigger or smaller centre tube?
Thanks !

Re: REAR DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
Ken , it is a washers and spacer with hole inside at the same dimension of the M151 bolt . I was made it in a machinery shop (4 of them) , but unfortunately I didn't keep the dimension of them.....it is not difficult
