53' M38A1 M1919 Project.

Post by LukeM38A1 » Sun Feb 16, 2014 11:30 pm

I have been wanting a show gun on my M38A1 for awhile now, With replicas reaching over $500+, why not make my own? So I did. Started about two months ago with the mount, got the swivel head on ebay for about $120. All and all the whole thing costed me about under $200 to make. I have got the plans if anybody wants them, If anyone has any questions ill be glad to answer. I know its not totally a realistic setup but Its pretty darn good for someone like me.

That looks good! Any plans to add the support legs to it? I am in the same boat as you were - kinda. I have a semi 1919a4 that I built and an M38a1. All I want to do is shoot my gun while mounted in the Jeep! But, on the other hand, I'm kinda cheap! And $600 for an M31c + $375 for the yoke is beyond my "acceptable" spending range to do that! I saw the parts on eBay and emailed the guy about them, but he said they are cast and wouldn't hold up to the strain of live fire. I have seen the top bearing (or whatever you call it) for $100, but a real yoke is still $375 which would put me in the $600 range. This is almost acceptable.

It probably would be more authentic with the legs, sadly I don't have the plans for them.

Not sure if 9/10ths of the population would notice legs, or lack of legs. From what I can see, it looks pretty darn cool!!

I'll bet you don't get a lot of people driving too close to you either!!

I want one!! Haha!!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking your pedestal at all. I'm just thinking out loud about how to go about building one myself. I would think that for a live fire version that I would need the legs - or would they only be needed for full auto fire?

That is true, 9/10 people wouldn't even know. It wouldn't be difficult to add the legs at all, with the live fire I would definitely go with the legs for support. I will eventually add the legs on, it does in fact sway a little when off roading. I know you aren't knocking it, I Thank you for bringing it up.

Interesting! Doesn't look like it would do that being mounted solidly to the frame.

It doesn't sway very much, but it does have a little bit of ply probably because there Is 3 or 4 coats of floor paint.
