20907524, a typical early Korean War M-38. If you keep sanding, the original 2" numbers may come up.

Re: can you tell what it the numbers are?
Looks to me like 2090x524 where everything but the "x" is pretty certain. The rounded bottom of what is showing in the "x" digit makes me think it is not a "1". I suspect that a "1" would have a bottom more like the bottom of the "4" (though the bottom of the "4" is not very clear). Makes me more inclined to believe the "x" digit is a "7". Does anyone have any pics anywhere of numbers with this font that include a "1" or "7" for comparison? That would be most helpful.

Found this in a thread under Vintage Photos. Looks like the same font. Unfortunately no "7", but the "1" does not look like the digit in question here.

Here's a couple that contain "7" in what looks to be the same font. I'm gonna say 20907524

Note that it is an M-38, I do not believe that USA numbers starting with 20901XXX were used on the M-38.
Lloyd White used to keep a comprehensive list of M-38 Registrations, and years ago, assisted owners thru MVPA Army Motors correspondence on these numbers. The "1" is questionable. The 5th digit could also be an "8" which would be within M-38 USA series of numbers.
The WWII 8 digit MB/GPW hood numbers do not reach 209.

I think it is an 8. look at the thin top and to the right of the curve at the bottom. Just wondering.

Re: can you tell what it the numbers are?
The hood numbers are not in the original Willys factory font. They are from a brass stencil kit from the Motor Pool or Company Supply

Re: can you tell what it the numbers are?
Wes Knettle has some M-38 USA and Serial No. data he has researched. Both USA's are a M-38 possibility, tying them to the serial No may be give a reasonable answer. Sometimes when the vehicles go in for a repaint, the USA Number is hand written on the reverse side of the instrument panel data plate.
