My MUTT
Up for your consideration is my MUTT, believed to be a 65, with no data plate, but body number is 17400. I believe it to be a late 64 that had the turn signals added directly to the fender, notice no boss's. Can you say "This MUTT has been in an accident"?? Can you also say "Bondo!!!!! Oh NO!!!"
So far, I have eliminated all the bondo.... back to all steel... she is starting to look like a Repo Depot re-paint. LOL

Re: My MUTT
i think you have a straight 151, not an A1, but i don't know what year the A1's started. has ken gotten in touch with you at all? he'd know for certain.

Re: My MUTT
That is a straight 151. Early shovel handle brackets (Kaiser I believe?), No front turn signals (originally), Single handle hood latches, No separate blackout brake light in the back. I will bet the floor drains are oval shaped aren't they? Should also have screw adjust seats and a ratchet style emergency brake. That is going to be a 63 or earlier. It does have a later A2 steering wheel which could mean the entire column and box has been changed, will need other pictures to tell that.

Re: My MUTT
You are correct about the drain holes, they are oval, there is no blackout taillight on it. However, see the picture about the seat. Looks like two slots, no screw adjust. As for the steering column, see picture number two. The vehicle came with a new replacement steering wheel.
As far as the clutch/brake assembly, I thought it would be easier on me to replace the worn out brake return spring by taking out the assembly. Yes??? No???
I sent a request to Ken (MUTTGURU) but he has yet to contact me. If this is really a straight M151, my head is swimming about what to do about that, and trying to gain a title here in Michigan.

Re: My MUTT
A1 or later seats, I am sure they were added in as was the A2 steering wheel. The steering column and box are original and look pretty leaky.
If you are talking about the return spring that attaches to the clutch arm I would just change that by itself. You pretty much have to take it off to remove the brackets anyway or things could fly.

Re: My MUTT
Yes, the steering gear is leaky, but the previous owner also painter it black with something like Chassis Saver. Stuff is as hard as Iron. This vehicle sustained a lot of damage at one time or another, so I would bet good money that the hood is also off a different vehicle.
I am still waiting on Ken, but until then, I'll say this is a 63. Thanks again Rick... you are the best!

I don't know how you tried to get hold of Ken but I was just conversing with him by e-mail yesterday. He does not read PM's very often, e-mail is best. Send an e-mail through the site.

Re: My MUTT
So today, camera, rag and can of Acetone in hand, braving the 6 degrees of Michigan Warmth (that's a joke) out into the garage I went. Cleaned off the plate to discover all kind of good information. The number on the plate (see photo) is actually 5016768. Definetly in the ball park for 1962. It would be a minor miracle if this was still the original engine, but hey I will take what I can get.

Re: My MUTT
If I am reading that contract number correctly it is a 1971 contract so that would mean a later engine. Still pre-AMG though, not that it makes a difference. the engines are all the same internally.

Re: My MUTT
Yessir indeed.... according to Ken aka: MUTTGURU, you were not far off. He states that the engine is a 1972 AMC. So now, I can approach the secretary of state, state of Michigan, and request a title search and a new title under the "Assembled Vehicle Act" State of Michigan. Thank goodness I took some before during and after photos. They want it all.
Again Rickf, you are the best... thanks for your help and guidance.....
