'40 Willy's in Cassino, Italy

Post by Tapper02 » Sat May 21, 2016 4:53 pm

I was visiting Monte Cassino and the War Memorials in the area on Friday. Coming down from a hike to some of the more remote sites, I ran into this parked at the head of the trail at the Polish War Cemetery:

Didn't see anyone around who might have owned it....

That photo of the left side is excellent, the jeep looks like it could have come straight from the front lines! Nicely done. :)

The data plates are bit odd, they're riveted instead of fastened with screws like a Willys, but especially the serial # and date stamping, certainly not original. Very cool G-503 regardless. Thanks for posting -

Though the data plates say its a Willy's MB, but the front cross member does not back that up  ...in my opinion!
May some senior experts shed more light on the make of this WWII beauty

GPW frame...maybe a rebuild with MB stuff on it....maybe a GPW all the way and the owner could only get repop "MB" data plates at the time?

However....from Warsaw to Naples it's about 1,300 KM....each way....that is one fine running jeep if it managed all that!
The sag in the rear may be due to some camping gear under the tarp but anyway you look at it, the owner had a long drive on less than "cushy" seats!

That's indeed a nice patina that jeep has.

I was part of a group who drove from the UK and Holland by car-train to the North of Italy and then drove to Monte Cassino. It is a very nice area and worth a visit.

The Polish monument was very, very impressive (look it up on google).

This is what it looks like :

Fine patina on the Jeep, even better on the Sherman.

Brave owner. Here in the UK I would be very hesitant to leave a Jeep unattended nowadays. Too many have vanished recently, never to be seen again.

30 years ago I often left a Jeep sitting on random London side streets for days at a time, never worried about it. Not any more.
