My new MB

Post by mattymajors » Tue Oct 10, 2017 7:51 pm

Hello all!

I picked this ‘45 MB in a barn in New Mexico in April. I finally got to get my hands on it this week. First order of business, removal of L-head that’s seized. Image

Here’s the donor CJ with a running L-head, and not much else.

My new MB

Got the running motor in; new mounts and new rad hoses. Need a starter worked on, the gear won’t eject. Pulled the front housing apart, and Bendix looks good. But it just spins- no gear engagement. Image

Edit: on further inspection the bendix was cracked and broke. Come on UPS!

What's the serial number of the motor you removed? The head looks like a correct WWII head...and that motor might be original to your MB.

Nice looking MB....what are your plans for it? Are you planning on rebuilding the proper motor or keep the post war civilian engine in it?

I agree.
I think I would be working on the motor you took out.

x2.

Keep the CJ engine running while you get systems working but put any real work into the MB engine, if that is what it is, with that as the eventual plan.

Matty,
Nice find on your MB.Interesting windshield extension...maybe a bigshot rail..
I like the nice lube chart pouch and how the late bond straps are still properly attached.Pretty quick work on the engine change and learning to post pictures :D .I hope we see more of this MB and yes we are curious about the seized wartime engine...

Wow guys thanks for the input. Yes, I’m planning on being snowed in a couple days and breaking into the engine I took out. I’ll post the serial and maybe I can get some feedback on age/use? The more I poured over the frame/underside tub this thing is too solid/complete not to take back to WWII resto.

The windshield isn’t extended, the glass and frame was just out of the brackets sitting on the cowel.

Looks like you've got a good project! Is there a serial number on the oval pad behind the oil filter of the MB's engine? It sounds promising that you've got a WWII block, but early CJ blocks shared the same casting number...the serial number on the pad will help to truly determine originality.
