This is the later version of the SC-C-28591 Bracket, note that it extends across the joint of the M-38A1 rear body side and the rear body panel and alligns with the Trailer Receptacle Grounding Screw.

NOTE the Guide A2 Reflector with Guidex Lens and proper screw used fto attach the reflector to the Jeep.

The Jeeep illustrated is an M-38A1 that has not been drilled for an antenna bracket.

This is the Early SC-C-28591 Bracket illustrated in the original 1951 dated Signal Corps Drawings of M-38 Radio Installation instructions and can be found in updates changed to indicate M-38A1 Installations. The mounting dimensions illustrated in those drawings do not relate to M-38A1 as the body is wider and the holes when drilled according to locations depicted will not allow the early mount to fit this M-38A1. It has to be installed by just using the bracket as a template on the M-38A1.
The Communications Personell or Mechanics involved had a simpler solution and used the mounting brackets as templates for drilling the mounting holes, using the Trailer Receptacle Grounding Screw to determine the height of the installation.

I do no not have the updated Drawings for the later SC-C-28591 Bracket, the two type of NOS brackets shown are the last of 100 that I stocked and wholesaled back in the 70's-80's to Jeep owners and other dealers.

I could not resist this photo of the dashboard of a well groomed M-38A1 that has had 37 years of constant use. The Responsible Agency Plate is Marine Corps, and the Identification Plate is blank. I have several NOS blank Data plate sets, the others are US Army.

This is the M-38A1 Hot Water Heater installation, it sure fills up the engine compartment. If only the CJ-5 of the 50's-60's could have installed this set up, it is so much better than the Civilian CJ-5 Factory Heaters.

Note the difference in the length of the rear of the two brackets, the later bracket is on the left. Also note the notch on the rear that is in line with the Trailer Receptacle when the mounting holes are located according to the drawings. It is much easier to drill the installation holes by using the bracket as a drilling template.
The small square plate on the upper right is the reinforcing plate and is installed inside the rear panel and is included with new issue antenna brackets. They are usually missing with used brackets. Mounting bolts are 5/16" NF.

BE BACK LATER, I DELETED THE PIC.

Upper bracket is the earlier SC-C-28591
Note the mounting holes on the late bracket on the bottom.
The upper MP-50 is the WWII version with "crinkle" finish. It is NOS and was purchased thru a G-503 seller last year.

Do not forget to use the correct toothed washers (Int/External Tooth)

Most of the present M-38A1 Collectors are unaware of the upper bracket which is designed for the wider body of the M-38A1

Well Joel you can do a nice job of sharing data. Very good photos. Could you edit the bracket photo posts so the descriptions you wrote can be co-located with the photo they refer to?

Again,
Thank you fro being a team player and sharing your photos and the very good looking M38A1.

A study of the SC-C-28591 Bracket installed on M-38A1 Jeeps will disclose a lot of deformed brackets that were obviously bent while trying to conform with the drawing when installing the early brackets designed for the M-38 on the wider M-38A1, however, 60 years into the game there are few who recognize this detail.
I still have a deformed bracket or two from the old days should anyone want to install one the way it sometimes used to happen.
If someone has the time and access to the PS-Magazines of the M-38/M-38A1 period, am positive that this detail will be featured in the Commo section of an old issue.

Remember there is a risk of electrical shock should anyone touch the antenna while the microphone is keyed.

It won't be an electrical shock. It will be an RF burn. The difference is that the RF burn starts in the bone and works its way out.
I have spare AB15 insulators. PM if interested.

A reminder to M-38A1 Owners to request the later corner bracket that is designed for the M-38A1. They are not that plentiful.

Cuz,
Not sure if this applied to the original question of this topic, but...

Didn't some of the M38's (and A1's?), have an antenna bracket mounted on the top of the spare tire bracket? If so, was this in addition to the rear corner mount or was the spare tire bracket mounting of an antenna just a different location?

Dan S
