PE 95 G will not turn over.

Post by matt506 » Mon Sep 18, 2017 2:46 pm

Ok
I spent over a year and half rebuilding this thing with totally rebuilt motor, wiring, frame, dash, and even rebuilt the original shipping crate. Was getting it ready and turning over with new gas and all of a sudden the generator will not turn the motor over. Checked all of the dash out and i have power going to the Gen. My fear is that the gen went bad. If so I am going to part this think out to recoup my money back for my GPW or WLA. Any ideas before I go that route? Matt

I think you need to step back here and take a big deep breath. The generator looks great!

1. Has the motor run since it was rebuilt? From the rust around the head and water pump, I assume yes.

2. Can you turn the motor over with the hand crank?

Your problem sounds mostly likely to be electrical - bad deadman's switch or the like, but one step at a time.

Nice unit, shame to part her out, Sell the WLA, to me! You have a lot of work in her.Sit back, have a beer or two, tomorrow is another day.

To crank this over, its only voltage going into the generator, through some coils and brushes then to ground. Is there power going into the generator section, is a brush stuck? did a wire burn off generator? Surely after doing all the work on this, another day or two fiddeling with her wont hurt.

I have coils and brushes and all those used parts if you are in a jam. Do you have a schematic?

You can always bolt on a jeep starter if you need to cheat.

Patrick, Adam,
thanks for the reply. I have sat on this since June but yes I will not part out as of now. I have power going from the terminal under the dash into the generator but never thought of brushes or such. Will try tonight. I am a very good Mechanic but anything more than simple electronics I am not good with. If this does not work I will try the remote Jeep starter just to get the motor broke in.
The motor turns over pretty good with the hand crank.
The motor never ran but after a week antifreeze started leaking out from the head gasket. I replaced it and again started leaking through it, not over or under actually through it.? I drained it for now but not sure whats going on.
What is a dead man switch? Matt

There are several safety switches on the PE 95 - I am calling them, maybe incorrectly "deadman's switches" because they will cause the generator to shut down if it overheats or if the oil pressure falls too low. In reality, deadman's switches are typically tied to a human and stop a train, elevator, etc. if the human operator ceases to take some action. Think foot pedals on scissor lifts.

What did you do to the electrical system?

Did you replace the wiring?

Has the starter function worked since you replaced the wiring?

Patrick,
I did replace and or cleaned tested all wires except the mains going in and out of the Generator part. The generator turned over and cranked the motor many times until it just quit. At first I figured the starter relay off the battery went bad as it got pretty hot a few times. but it tested out ok. I still need to get into the gen and test pawer to and from and check the brushes. At this time the start relay switch with the multiple contacts mounted on the dash was bad but I just jumped that and physically pressed on it to turn over ten. Matt

Matt:

Sounds like a switch or a loose wire or something. Start on one end and work through to the other. It is frustrating now, but sure will be satisfying when you get it fixed ;-)

Good luck, Patrick

Have you tried a direct solenoid start. 95s have a push button on the solenoid to directly start/bypass the panel. I'd disconnect the temp and oil shut downs and try this. Make sure all connections are tight on your exciter too. This looks too good the part out. Too many jeep guys gut these things. Jeeps are a dime a dozen. 95s are just as cool. I have one and would love to have hi def pics of yours.

Ok I did run through the button on the solenoid and when pushed I get power all the way through the system up to the armature brushes. The power looks less as the test light does not glow quit as bright as it does right off the battery. Here are my last checks,
1 Test battery for low amp put out
2 Cut insulation on generator armature in case of a bridge?
3 Possible bad armature.

All I can thick of, I will start cheapest and go up.

I don't have an answer to your issue.
But head gaskets will weep until the engine heats up. If not starting or able to start, drain coolant down to be below the top of the engine block.

Matt, where are you at with this?

just looked at one last week, reminded me of your unit. Finally got around to dig into one of these.

PO put a starter on it, so it does crank. so you need to first verify if yours turns, either by hand with the fan blade and some pressure on the belt, or with a hand crank or a starter.

You need a good 12 volt battery or pair of 6 volters that are both in good shape. They need to have eonugh power to start your pickup, not your garden tractor, check voltage and load test if possible. A test light that burns bright may work, also start a vehicle with it if possible.

12.5 volts with no load, this battery has been sitting for a bit.

Check and clean all battery connections, Negative needs to go to engine stud or chassis someplace, positive goes right to this solenoid and connects on the right, left side goes into the genset. Check for 12 volts on the right side of this solenoid with reference to a clean chassis ground. Operate solenoid manually, and check for 12 volts on the left side of solenoid. Ignore all the voodoo inside the control panel, just push in the red button on top of this solenoid, it will bypass everything inside.

12 volts on the left side indicates a open circuit inside genset, a lower voltage indicates something is trying to work.
